For the first time ever the UFC will come to the masses for free on Fox. The headliner of this event may be one of the most anticipated and difficult to call in the history of the UFC. Before looking at the main event there are also some very good matches in the preliminaries that could show us a new top contender in the lightweight division and a rapidly rising star at featherweight.

Featherweight Bout
Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier vs. Pablo “The Scarecrow” Garza
Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier (10-1) finished all seven fights to start his career before suffering his first and only loss to Danny Castillo via unanimous decision. He has fought twice within the UFC winning both by unanimous decision. Those three fights are the only times Poirier has gone the distance finishing five fights by (T)KO and three by submission. He mixes his hard hitting standup with excellent jiu-jitsu that has helped him become well versed in submission defense.
Winning his first two matches within the UFC with the word flying in the technique Pablo “The Scarecrow” Garza (11-1) is quickly becoming one of the most exciting fighters to watch. His UFC debut was over in 51 seconds winning by a flying knee knockout. He followed this impressive performance with a submission victory over Yves Jabouin by flying triangle choke. With those two victories he became the first man to fight, knockout and submit someone in the UFC at 145 pounds.
This bout promises to bring high intensity and skill into each facet of the fight. Both these competitors have shown the ability to finish fights at any moment and dominate in any position. Poirier (-325) is going to look to impose his will on the feet and launch a full body assault. While Garza (+245) does have very nice standup his strength lies in his jiu-jitsu. It will up to Garza to close the distance and get this fight to the mat where he is in far less danger and can work his submissions. Look for Garza to mix up his strikes, takedowns and submission attempts to keep Poirier off balance enough to win this fight.
Prediction – Pablo “The Scarecrow” Garza by way of unanimous decision

Lightweight Bout
Clay “The Carpenter” Guida vs. Ben “Smooth” Henderson
Clay “The Carpenter” Guida (29-11) is coming of the biggest win of his MMA career with a unanimous decision victory over Anthony Pettis. Guida is the definition of cardio machine which he uses to constantly pressure his opponents and drag them into fights at a relentless pace. He has heavy hands on the feet but the strongest part of his game is wrestling. Guida uses it to stifle any kind of rhythm his opponent is trying to get into and keeps them constantly uncomfortable and on their heels.
Another fighter coming off of the biggest win of his career is Ben “Smooth” Henderson (14-2). Snapping the seven fight win streak of Jim Miller and laying waste to the former number one contender will give Henderson massive amounts of confidence entering this fight. He is a unique talent inside the cage being able to effectively utilize all areas of MMA. In his victory over Jim Miller he used takedowns, ground and pound and submission defense like he was in the gym training. His calm only adds to how dangerous Henderson can be.
With the possibility of fighting for the lightweight belt looming over this fight you can bet both these men will show up with their A game. Guida (+200) is going to come into this bout and do what he always does, push the pace and capitalize on his opponents mistakes. The problem he will face is Henderson (-260) has the talent to match that pace and has virtually no glaring holes in his game. Guida’s biggest asset is that he is able to outwork people. Henderson will match his pace and exploit openings in Guida’s standup that he has shown in previous fights. Guida will be able to score a few takedowns but won’t be able to capitalize given Henderson’s high level ground skills.
Prediction – Ben “Smooth” Henderson by way of unanimous decision

Heavyweight Championship Bout
Cain Velasquez (Champion) vs. Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos (Challenger)
The last time Cain Velasquez (9-0) fought was back in October of 2010 where he completely dismantled then heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar. Cain dominated every area of the fight from striking to wrestling on his way to a first round TKO. He has spent most of his career inside the UFC only having two fights outside of the organization. In the seven fights inside the octagon he finished six of those by (T)KO. Cain’s best attribute is his wrestling which comes from training the sport since high school. The biggest question about his game use to be his striking. He immediately put that to rest with a first round knockout of Antonio Nogueira. Cain is an all around excellent fighter who can finish fights anywhere.
Speed is what Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos (13-1) kills with having some of the fastest hands in the heavyweight division. The only blemish on his record came back in November of 2007 in an organization outside of the UFC. Since entering the octagon he is 7-0 finishing four fights by (T)KO and one by submission. Even though Junior has a very good submission game it isn’t often showcased because of how good he is on the feet. In his most recent bout he was able to out strike heavyweight bomber Shane Carwin with crisp and quick boxing.
This is the kind of fight that UFC fans have been waiting for at the heavyweight division. This fight has the potential to be a five round classic or ended within the first minute with a big punch. Junior (+135) is going to be using pretty much the same strategy he used against Carwin. He effectively kept at a distance using his jab, flurried only when he felt there was a big opening and scored takedowns to seal his victory. On the other side Cain (-165) will be pressing forward with power punches and look to bring the fight down and land his vicious ground and pound. If either one of these guys lands flush it could be a short night. More realistically Cain will land on the feet opening up opportunities for takedowns that he will capitalize on. Cain’s superior wrestling gets him the win in his first title defense.
Prediction – Cain Velasquez by way of TKO
