Lightweight Bout
Edson “Junior” Barboza vs. Terry Etim
Edison “Junior” Barboza (9-0) will be putting his perfect record on the line when he steps into the cage. He finished his first seven fights winning six by (T)KO and one by submission with only two of those fights exiting the first round. His last two bouts with Ross Pearson and Anthony Njokuani earned the Brazilian Fight of the Night honors.
After being shelved for 18 months due to an injury Terry Etim (15-3) made an impressive return to the octagon with a 17 second submission win over Edward Faaloloto. Since his arrival to the UFC in 2007 he has gone 6-3 and won Submission of the Night honors four times. Before entering the UFC he was a perfect 9-0 finishing every one of his opponents, eight by submission and one by knockout.
This is a fight between two young, well-rounded up and comers in the UFC. While Barboza (-270) has been a beast in most of his fights it was evident by his last two that if his timing and rhythm get thrown off he can have problems. It is Etim’s (+210) job to keep him off schedule and avoid the big power of Barboza. On top of that Etim’s best chance at winning this fight is closing the distance to clinch up and get this bout to the mat where he can use his top shelf jiu-jitsu. That will be dangerous because he’ll have to wade through Barboza’s wheelhouse to get there. This bout stays on the feet where Barboza beats him up and looks to finish when the opportunity presents itself.
Prediction – Edson “Junior” Barboza by way of TKO

Welterweight Bout
Erick Silva vs. Carlo “Neo” Prater
This will be the second time Erick Silva (13-1, 1NC) will step into the octagon with his first being a knockout victory in just 40 seconds against Luis Ramos. He has shown well rounded skills outside the UFC winning seven fights by submission and three by (T)KO. Silva is also the inaugural Jungle Fight Welterweight Champion winning it in October of 2010.
A veteran of 40 MMA fights Carlo “Neo” Prater (29-10-1) will be making his UFC debut. Prater is currently riding a four fight win streak where he finished all four by way of submission. His obvious strength is the ground game finishing 16 fights by submission.
The greatest threat that Silva (-485) will face is if this fight hits the mat. If he is able to keep the fight standing Prater (+395) will have a hard time weathering the superior standup of Silva. Prater will make it a tough, competitive fight but in the end Silva’s striking and reach advantage will be too much to overcome.
Prediction – Erick Silva by way of unanimous decision

Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares vs. Mike “The Master of Disaster” Massenzio
Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares (13-3) is as much known for his devastating heel hooks as he is for his unusual behavior inside the cage. In his fight with Nate Marquardt he turned to the referee to complain about greasing and got TKOed for his trouble. In his most recent battle against Dan Miller he had him badly hurt on the ground and decided to celebrate before the ref stopped the fight. He went on to win a unanimous decision but made the bout much harder on himself.
Recently Mike “The Master of Disaster” Massenzio (13-5) has had problems with consistency dropping four of his last seven. His problems have mainly come inside the UFC going 2-3 having been finished twice. Massenzio comes from a strong wrestling background which he supports with solid jiu-jitsu.
If Massenzio (+375) wants to win this fight he is going to have to drag Palhares into deep waters. Palhares (-475) has shown before that in later rounds he begins to fade. This means Massenzio is going to have to weather an early onslaught and still have enough left to finish the fight late. But the more likely scenario is that Palhares comes out fast and finishes fast.
Prediction – Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares by way of TKO

Middleweight Bout
“The Phenom” Vitor Belfort vs. Anthony “Rumble” Johnson
“The Phenom” Vitor Belfort (20-9) has been a staple of MMA since 1996. He is the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and also held that belt in Affliction before it dissolved. Since his drop to middleweight he has gone 4-1 with his only loss coming to the current 185 pound champ Anderson Silva. He is known for the blistering speed he has in his hands which also come equipped with one punch knockout power.
Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (10-3) is coming off a first round Knockout of the Night performance against Charlie Brenneman. This will be his debut at middleweight, a much better fit for his frame then welterweight. While he likes to stand and trade his true strength is in his wrestling coupled with the ability to control position.
This fight will be decided by who can keep the fight where they are most comfortable. Even though Johnson (EV) will have the reach advantage he’s going to be in danger whenever the fight is on its feet. What he should do is bully Belfort (-130) against the cage and use clinch work to wear him down and score takedowns where he can. It will be Belfort job to blitz in with strikes and get out of arms reach before Johnson can grab a hold of him. With the extra 15 pounds Johnson will be the strongest he’s ever been inside the cage.
Prediction – Anthony “Rumble” Johnson by way of unanimous decision

Featherweight Championship Bout
Jose “Junior” Aldo (Champion) vs. Chad “Money” Mendes (Challenger)
Riding a thirteen fight win streak champion Jose “Junior” Aldo (20-1) has shown time and again why he deserves to be mentioned with the very best pound for pound fighters in the world. He was the last WEC featherweight champion and is the first in the UFC. Aldo uses precise striking with a mix of wild techniques that keep his opponents off balance it terms of timing.
Chad “Money” Mendes (12-0) boasts a perfect record in MMA and has won his last four bouts by way of unanimous decision. While he has shown improved standup his modus operandi is still to use strikes to set up takedowns. In his previous bouts his opponents have had a hard time keeping the fight standing because of Mendes’ superior wrestling.
This fight is going to remind people why Aldo is so highly ranked among all the fighters in the world. Everyone got spoiled by his WEC domination so two unanimous decision victories in a row looks rather lackluster. Aldo (-240) is going to impose his will on the feet and defend the takedowns of Mendes. If Urijah Faber wasn’t able to get Aldo to the mat then Mendes (+190) is going to have troubles. Even if the fight goes to the ground Aldo has the jiu-jitsu skills to neutralize Mendes. Bettors can be confident that Aldo is ready to defend the takedowns and assert himself with striking.
Prediction – Jose “Junior” Aldo by way of TKO
