UFC 132 Preview and Predictions
UFC 132 Lightweight Bout
Dennis Siver vs Matt “Handsome” Wiman
Dennis Siver (18-7) is a Russian born fighter who uses strong kickboxing and taekwondo to pick apart his opponents on the feet. Siver has won seven of his last eight fights and is on a three fight win streak. His last loss was via unanimous decision to Ross Pearson but he earned himself a Fight of the Night bonus with his performance. In February Siver pulled out an upset against Sotiropoulos where he showed improved take down defense and dominant stand up.
As a three time Fight of the Night winner expect fireworks when Matt “Handsome” Wiman (13-5) enters the cage. Wiman shows well rounded skills winning five fights by decision, four by submission and four by TKO or KO. He is a product of The Ultimate Fighter 5 which saw him reach the quarterfinals where he lost to eventual finalist Manvel Gamburyan. He has recently gathered momentum riding a three fight win streak and has only been finished once in his career.
Wiman (EV) is going to try to impose his will by scoring takedowns and being a bully on the ground. His strength is his wrestling and he is going to need to get in tight to initiate the clinch and use it to his advantage. On the other hand Siver (-130) is a German Kickboxing Champion and showed excellent takedown defense in his last fight. If this fight stays standing the advantage is heavily in Siver’s favor. With improved takedown defense and world class standup Siver takes this fight.
UFC 132 Dennis Siver vs Matt “Handsome” Wiman Prediction – Dennis Siver by way of TKO
UFC 132 Welterweight Bout
Carlos “Natural Born Killer” Condit vs “Stun Gun” Dong Hyun Kim
The last WEC welterweight champion ever Carlos “Natural Born Killer” Condit (26-5) has shown well rounded skills and an aggressiveness that is not easily matched. Of his twenty-six victories only one has gone the distance finishing thirteen by submission and eleven by TKO or KO. Condit has won eleven of his last twelve fights and in his last victory became the first person to knockout Dan Hardy.
Dong Hyun Kim (14-0-1, 1 NC) holds an undefeated professional record and possess world-class judoka. His no contest came in January of 2009 where he initially lost a split decision to Karo Parisyan but was later overturned when Karo tested positive for banned painkillers. Kim uses his judoka to take fighters to the ground and grind them out. Five of his last seven fights have gone to decision.
There is a very obvious clash of styles in this fight. Both fighters are aggressive but in very different ways. Kim (-125) uses his judo and wrestling to stay in tight with fighters and smother them till he feels comfortable to mount an offense. Conversely Condit (-105) looks to remove the head from shoulders with every punch, kick, elbow and knee he throws. Condit must be careful in this fight to not be over aggressive and walk into the big takedowns of Kim. If this fight does go to the ground Condit has a very well rounded submission game that can neutralize the powerful wrestling of Kim. Condit will come into this fight having worked heavily on his sprawl and takedown defense and look to keep this fight standing. Bettors should favor the Natural Born Killer in this fight.
UFC 132 Carlos “Natural Born Killer” Condit vs “Stun Gun” Dong Hyun Kim Prediction – Carlos “Natural Born Killer” Condit by way of unanimous decision
UFC 132 Light Heavyweight Bout
“Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz vs Ryan “Darth” Bader
At one time “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz (16-8-1) was the scariest and most dominant champion in the UFC. Now Ortiz hasn’t won a fight since 2006, is on a four fight losing streak with a draw in that stretch and it has been hinted at that he should retire by UFC President Dana White. This is Ortiz’s last chance to extend his career with the UFC because another loss surely means the Huntington Beach Bad Boy’s days with the UFC are up.
Ryan “Darth” Bader (12-1) suffered the first loss of his young career against now light heavyweight champion Jon Jones back in February of this year. Bader came out of season 8 of The Ultimate Fighter and won the tournament in emphatic fashion by knocking out Magelhaes in the first round. Since he has gone four and one with wins over MMA veterans Keith Jardine and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.
In his prime Ortiz (+400) could do pretty much what ever he wanted to opponents but mostly took them down and rained down ground and pound that was frightening to watch. But now in 2011 at 36 years of age and his last win coming against Ken Shamrock in October of 2006 this is a much different Tito. To make matters worse he is facing a hungry up-and-comer coming off his first loss eager to get back in the cage. Bader (-600) is a good wrestler himself and also has one punch knockout power. Bader wins this fight and ends an era.
UFC 132 “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Tito Ortiz vs Ryan “Darth” Bader Prediction – Ryan “Darth” Bader by way of KO
UFC 132 Middleweight Bout
“The Axe Murderer” Wanderlei Silva vs Chris “The Crippler” Leben
Easily one of the scariest fighters ever to step into the cage “The Axe Murderer” Wanderlei Silva is making his long awaited return to competition. This will be his second fight at 185 pounds making the switch from light heavyweight after going one and three in the division. In Pride Silva won the middleweight championship in 2001 and went on a six year reign of terror that was ended in February of 2007 by Dan Henderson. Still known as one of the most explosive and exciting fighters ever to put on gloves he looks to regain the form that once made him so dominant.
Chris “The Crippler” Leben (21-7) follows a fairly straight forward game plan, throw haymakers until the guy across from him is sleeping. He has an iron chin and even heavier hands to back up that reckless style. The high point of his career took place in the months of June and July of last year. Leben won via TKO over Aaron Simpson and only four days later excepted a fight that took place less then two weeks after his victory. He ended up tapping out Yoshihiro Akiyama with only :20 left in the fight via triangle choke. His trainer blamed his first round TKO loss to Brian Stann on illness and now Leben has the opportunity to try to defeat a MMA legend.
A piece of advice for everyone watching this fight, don’t blink. Both these men have well established one punch knockout power and they’re both going to be swinging for the fences. This is essentially the breakdown for this fight – which fighter will land the bomb first? Leben’s (+145) chin has been tested in many of his fights and he has only been stopped by TKO twice in his career. Silva (-175) has been knocked out in his career from being overly aggressive. Silva is also going to be dealing with a 17 month lay off from the cage because of nagging injuries. This is a fight that bettors should back the underdog in because if this fight dissolves into a slugfest and all indicators point toward yes, Leben will have the upper hand.
UFC 132 “The Axe Murderer” Wanderlei Silva vs Chris “The Crippler” Leben Prediction – Chris “The Crippler” Leben by way of KO
UFC 132 Bantamweight Championship Bout
Dominick Cruz (Champion) vs “The California Kid” Urijah Faber (Challenger)
Dominick Cruz (17-1) suffered the only loss of his career to the man that is looking to take his belt. That fight was for the WEC Featherweight Championship that Faber won by guillotine choke in March of 2007. Cruz became the first ever UFC bantamweight champion when he defeated Scott Jorgensen in December of last year by way of unanimous decision. Cruz uses slick boxing to get in and out quickly landing shots while confusing his opponents to his timing.
Holding the WEC featherweight belt for over two years “The California Kid” Urijah Faber (25-4) quickly became the poster boy for the organization. Faber successfully defended his belt ten times before he ran into Mike Brown who defeated him to take his belt and again when Urijah was challenging. It was getting completely dominated by Jose Aldo that made Urijah make the switch to bantamweight. Urijah has strong stand up but is most comfortable grappling. He has won two bouts at 135 and is now taking on the current champion and long time rival.
It’s no mystery that these two men don’t like each other. Urijah (+105) handed Cruz the only blemish of his career and these two have been at odds ever since. What makes this fight so interesting is that both men can hold their own in each others worlds. Cruz (-135) wants to make this fight a technical boxing match. He is going to use his illusiveness to stay mobile and not let Faber use his unorthodox striking and excellent grappling to drag this fight to the ground. Bantamweight is Cruz’s world and their last fight took place in Urijah’s. Cruz is going to avenge the only loss of his career and take down the biggest name he’s ever fought.
