UFC 131 Lightweight Bout Preview, Odds, Tips and Predictions
Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone vs Vagner Rocha
This will be Vagner Rocha’s (6-1) debut in the octagon stepping in for an injured Mac Danzig. Rocha has been pro since 2009 and is primarily known for his Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Of his six wins four have come by way of submission, specifically three by armbar, and one by knockout. He has fought both in Strikeforce and Bellator accumulating a record of two and one in these major promotions. Rocha will be making a significant jump in competition coming over to the UFC and he will immediately be tested in the ultra deep division of lightweights.
When Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (14-3-0, 1NC) enters the octagon it is guaranteed fireworks. He is a Fight of the Night winner six times and was awarded Fight of the Year by Sherdog in 2009. In the WEC he fought for the lightweight title three times losing all three which included two loses to Ben Henderson. He entered the UFC in February of 2011 after they merged with the WEC winning by way of rear naked choke in the second round. He has won twelve of his fights by submission which greatly compliments his ever evolving standup.
Rocha (+290) is a new comer to MMA and has not yet had the opportunity to fight the elite of the sport. While he has a very nice jiu-jitsu game most of his talents have been untested. In his time with the WEC Cerrone (-380) fought some of the best talent in the organization and on multiple occasions fought his way to title contention. That said this is going to be Cerrone’s fight. He has superior standup and has a grappling game that can neutralize Rocha’s strengths. Bettors can feel confident backing the Cowboy in this fight.

UFC 131 Middleweight Bout Bout Preview, Odds, Tips and Predictions
Demian Maia vs Mark Munoz
Demian Maia (14-2) is one of the best jiu-jitsu practitioners in the middleweight division. Four times Maia has won Submission of the Night and eight of his fourteen wins have come by way of submission. He may have some of the best pure grappling in the UFC but in his title fight against Anderson Silva it was obvious his standup leaves much to be desired. He was completely dominated on the feet when Silva decided to attack and didn’t come close to scoring a takedown to utilize his grappling. He showed some improvements in his standup in his unanimous decision victory against Kendall Grove but there are still noticeable holes to exploit.
A strong collegiate wrestling background is the foundation for the way Mark Munoz (10-2) fights. His excellent wrestling opens up opportunities for Munoz to use his vicious ground and pound which he showcased against Kendall Grove. Grove had no answers when he got taken down and payed for it by eating multiple punches which made the referee jump in and stop the fight. What Munoz lacks in technical striking he makes up for in power. One punch from Munoz can end anyones night.
There is a saying in fighting that styles make fights. This is a classic matchup of wrestling versus jiu-jitsu. Often when there is a fight between two very good grapplers it is the standup that decides the fight. Maia (-105) is going to look to close the distance and get in tight to utilize his superior submissions. This is where Munoz (-125) will use his heavy hands and strong wrestling to keep Maia at bay. Look for Munoz to dictate the pace of this fight and only go to the ground when he feels he is safe from the quick submissions of Maia. Bettors should back the powerful standup and wrestling to Munoz in this fight.

UFC 131 Heavyweight Bout Preview, Odds, Tips and Predictions
Jon Olav Einemo vs Dave Herman
Jon Olav Einemo (7-1) has finished all his wins with five by submission and one by knockout. He is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and holds the honor of being the only man to beat Roger Gracie in the Abu Dhabi Combat Club tournament. His biggest weakness is he hasn’t competed in MMA for over five years and in this sport that’s an eternity.
Dave Herman (20-2) has won fourteen fights by knockout and five by submission. He started out his MMA career with a fifteen fight win streak but was finally stopped by punches in January of 2009 against Choi Mu-Bae. The only other loss was a disqualification due to illegal knees in May of 2010. He has shown in his wins that he can not only end fights standing but also on the ground with his submissions.
The biggest advantage that Herman (-250) will enjoy in this fight is that he has competed in the back half of the last decade. MMA is constantly evolving and fighters will tell you that ring rust is very real. While Einemo (+190) is a very good submission artist in the heavyweight division five years is too long to remain inactive. Herman will use this to push the pace and make cardio a factor in this fight.

UFC 131 Featherweight Bout Preview, Odds, Tips and Predictions
Kenny “KenFlo” Florian vs Diego Nunes
Kenny “KenFlo” Florian (15-5) earned a shot at the lightweight belt in 2009 by amassing an impressive six fight win streak which included four submission and one TKO win. It was B.J. Penn that showed Florian what it took to be a champion at the highest level of MMA by submitting him with a rear naked choke in the fourth round. Since then Florian has gone two and one, his loss coming in a number one contender fight in the lightweight division. Florian has made the decision to drop down a weight class and bring his muay thai talents to the featherweight division.
Diego Nunes (16-1) has an impressive overall record that dates back to 2004. Starting his career with thirteen wins his lone loss came against LC Davis in the WEC in 2009. In his UFC debut earlier this year he defeated Mike Brown by a split decision. Nunes prefers kickboxing with five wins by knockout but has also finished six fights with submission.
This has the makings of a very exciting fight with both men wanting to make a statement. Florian (-300) wants to come in and immediately make a splash in his new weight class by making short work of Nunes. Dana White has already said if Florian wins he will most likely get a title shot. Nunes (+220) is looking to show that featherweight is his home and he is no ones stepping stone. The drop in weight is going to be kind to Florian. He is going to have an easier time muscling people around since he is use to fighting 155 pounders. Look for Florian to come in hungry knowing an impressive victory will give him a shot at the UFC Featherweight title.

UFC 131 Main Event – Heavyweight Bout Preview, Odds, Tips and Predictions
Junior Dos Santos vs Shane Carwin
Junior Dos Santos (12-1) has the fastest hands in the heavyweight division. Dos Santos has an impressive six fight with streak in the UFC with five of those wins coming by stoppages. He has twice earned himself Knockout of the Night and his last victory came against The Ultimate Fighter winner Roy Nelson. He was originally slated to take on Brock Lesner but he had to pull out due to illness.
Shane Carwin (12-1) is the former UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion which he won by knocking out Frank Mir in March of 2010. Before his fight to have a unified heavyweight champion Carwin looked unstoppable. Five times he has finished a fight in the first minute and has never been outside of the first round in a win. The opening round looked like much of the same against Brock Lesner. He had a dominating first and almost finished the fight with ground and pound. His first time stepping into the second round was a much different story. Carwin gassed bad and was submitted by arm triangle 2:19 into the second. Carwin is looking to get another shot at the title with a win over Dos Santos.
Being this is a number one contender fight both men will step into the octagon ready to trade. They both have fantastic standup, Dos Santos utilizing speed and technique while Carwin uses crushing power. Carwin (+140) has the ability to finish anyone with one punch which is evident by his extremely short fights. To counter this Dos Santos (-170) will look to use his speed to stay on the outside and not walk into one of Carwin’s bombs. The only time Carwin has been outside the first he faded quickly. Dos Santos is surely going to try to bring this fight into later rounds to slow Carwin down and pick him apart. Bettors can feel confident that when Dos Santos drags this fight into the second and third rounds he will capitalize in devastating fashion.
