2013 Indianapolis 500 Picks and Free Tips: Podium Predictions: With Carb Day in the books, the next time that the drivers will take the track at Indianapolis will be for the 2013 Indy 500. For any open-wheel driver, the Indy 500 is likely at the top of the list of races they want to win, and a victory at Indianapolis ensures that a driver will always have a place in racing history. As a result, it is understandable that many drivers view anything less than a win in the Indianapolis 500 as irrelevant, but from betting standpoint, being able to pick the three drivers that make it to the podium can be just as lucrative. With that in mind, here is a closer look at my picks to take the top three spots in the 2013 Indianapolis 500 this Sunday.
Winner: Scott Dixon, Target Chip Ganassi Racing
After one strong showing after another for a decade at Indianapolis, Dixon is well past due for a second Indy 500 win. His career numbers in the race include five top-five finishes and eight top-10s in 10 starts, and his 7.6 average finish is tied for the best of any driver in the field. Not to mention the fact that Dixon has led more laps than any other driver in the field this weekend, as well. Despite a mediocre qualifying effort, he flexed his real muscle on Carb Day by posting the fourth-fastest time. Dixon always finds his way to the front at Indy, and after seven straight finishes of sixth or better, including a runner-up effort last year, the 2008 winner will lift the Borg-Warner Trophy for the second time Sunday.
Second Place: Marco Andretti, Andretti Autosport
He finished off what has been a great week by cracking the top 10 during the final practice session, and I expect Andretti to get to the front in a hurry from his third-place starting spot. After all, we are talking about a driver with three top-three finishes in the Indianapolis 500 in just seven starts and a reputation for running hard from the drop of the green. In fact, I think Andretti’s tendency to push the envelope so hard will ultimately take a toll. I fully expect him to be in contention in the closing laps, but I foresee the “Andretti Curse” continuing as another strong effort from Marco at Indy comes up just short.
Third Place: Helio Castroneves, Team Penske
He has had his worst two-race stretch at Indianapolis of his career the past two years, but the three-time winner of the Indy 500 should change that this weekend. Statistics alone suggest he will rebound from his average results in 2011 and 2012 in a big way. After all, his three victories tie him with Dario Franchitti for the most of any driver in the field, and his 7.6 average finish in the race is also tied for the best. Meanwhile, Castroneves leads all active drivers with six top-five finishes and 10 top-10s in the Indy 500. He is starting in the top 10 Sunday, which means he won’t have to work overly hard to get to the front, and he can more or less manage his race the way he wants to and still stay in touch with the leaders. Castroneves obviously knows how to seal the deal at Indianapolis, and while I don’t see him grabbing that elusive fourth win this weekend, I do expect him to be near the front when it matters most.
