2013 Indianapolis 500 Free Picks: Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs

2013-Indy-500-Odds-and-Predictions2013 Indianapolis 500 Free Picks – Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs: When you look at the list of Indianapolis 500 winners, it reads like a laundry list of the great drivers in the history of the sport. However, a big reason why that many of the Indy 500 winners are considered greats is because of their performance in the sport’s most prestigious event. Yes, some drivers have accomplished a lot and then capped their legacy with a win at Indy, but many others have launched their great careers by first capturing the Big-Warner Trophy. In other words, bettors shouldn’t rule out the possibility of a surprise winner this weekend. With that in mind, here is a closer look at a few drivers that have a chance to upset the big names this weekend by winning the 2013 Indianapolis 500.

The name Oriol Servia doesn’t exactly carry a lot of weight in the IndyCar Series, but that could change this weekend if he continues his recent success at Indianapolis. After finishing 11th in his Indy 500 debut in 2008, he suffered an engine issue in 2009. Since then, he has been stellar, finishing sixth and fourth the last two seasons. Take away the engine problem, and Servia has never had a bad showing at Indy. More importantly, he has been getting stronger and stronger with each start. He may not have the all-around talent to compete for a series title just yet, but his results at Indianapolis speak for themselves. Servia has 25/1 odds to win this weekend, and based on his progression at the track, he could end up being a steal for bettors.

If you look at Takuma Sato’s numbers at Indianapolis, it is easy to understand why he is only a 28/1 longshot to win Sunday. In three starts in the event, he has compiled a disappointed 23.2 average finish and has yet to finish in the top 15. However, those numbers are a little misleading because of how his race ended last season. Sato led 31 laps in the 2012 Indy 500 and was attempting to pass Dario Franchitti for the lead on the final lap. He ended up spinning out and hitting the wall as he tried to keep from making contact with Franchitti, and while his end result was a 17th-place finish, Sato could just have easily won the race. Throw in the fact that he enters the race as the point leader, and Sato might just be able to seal the deal this weekend after coming so close one year ago.

He didn’t get off to a good start at Indianapolis, but Graham Rahal has turned a corner after finishing outside the top 30 in his first two starts in the race. Rahal has a 9.3 average finish in his place showing in 2011 and even spent a handful of laps at the front of the field. Not to mention the fact that he finished second at the end of last season at a very fast Texas track so the high speeds at Indy shouldn’t bother him. Obviously, Rahal doesn’t boast the resume or consistency of some of the bigger names, but at his current 33/1 odds, his upward trend at the track makes him worth considering.

Alex Tagliani has had some success at Indianapolis since his debut, but he is a 40/1 longshot this weekend in large part because he has never been able to make a serious statement. He won the Rookie of the Race Award in 2009 after starting 33rd and finishing 11th, and the next year he started fifth and finished 10th. Tagliani actually won the pole in 2011, but a crash destroyed what might have been a race-winning car. He got back on track last year with a 12th-place showing, and he will start a solid 11th this weekend. Tagliani clearly has a decent feel for Indianapolis, and given his long odds, bettors may want to take a chance on him in case this is the year when everything finally falls in place for him.
