This tournament first began on the PGA Tour back in 2003 when it was called the Wachovia Championship. The tournament played under that sponsored name until 2009 when it changed to the Quail Hollow Championship for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. It has now been called the Wells Fargo Championship since 2011 and it is a stop on the tour that has been able to attract most of the biggest stars on the tour each season. The event is famous for the last three holes on the course and it is often referred to as the “Green Mile”. It’s called that because those 16, 17 and 18 holes are annually ranked as three of the toughest holes on the tour.

Last year’s winner of the Wells Fargo Championship was USA’s J.B. Holmes. Holmes shot a four round score of 274 to finish -14 under par and win by one stroke.
