2013 US Open Odds, Predictions and Free Picks – Tiger Woods the Vegas Favorite

2013-US-Open-Odds-Free-Picks-and-Predictions2013 U.S. Open Vegas Betting Odds, Expert Predictions, Tips and Free Picks – Favorites and Early Lines to Win at the East Course of the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania: The 2013 U.S. Open is set to begin Thursday, and for the best golfers in the world, the tournament marks their second chance of the season to notch add a major title to their resume. This year’s U.S. Open will be played at Merion Golf Club’s East Course, and while the course as a whole is considered short by major standards, it is far from a walk in the park. Small greens and narrow fairways are a staple of a course. Meanwhile, many of the par 3s and par 4s that dominate the course are exceptionally long compared to those seen at most tournaments. As a result, the supposedly short course can cause even the best golfers to post some rather big scores. Whoever emerges from the field to win Sunday is going to have to rely on accuracy off the tee rather than power, and a solid putter won’t hurt either.

The Favorites

Critics seem to point to the fact that Tiger Woods hasn’t won a major since 2008 as a sign that he is no longer one of the best golfers on the tour. Well, his PGA-best four wins and five top-five finishes in just eight starts in 2013 say otherwise. Not to mention the fact that in the 15 major tournaments Woods has played in since his last victory, he has finished sixth or better eight times. Woods is a three-time U.S. Open champion for his career and has finished sixth or better in five of his last seven starts in the tournament. Aside from his implosion at the Memorial, his putter has actually been excellent this year, and if anything, the shorter holes could keep him from getting into trouble with his driver off the tee. Woods may be in the middle of a drought when it comes to major titles, but it could definitely come to an end this Sunday.

No golfer is playing better heading into the U.S. Open than Matt Kuchar. He has finished second and first in his two tournaments leading up to the U.S. Open, and he is the only player not named Tiger Woods with multiple wins on the tour this year. Granted, he has never won a major, but he has been close a number of times recently. Since the start of the 2010 season, he has finished in the top 10 in five of the 13 major tournaments, including an eighth-place finish in The Masters earlier this year. Yes, it would be nice to see Kuchar be a little more consistent off the tee, but he could easily ride his recent wave of momentum to the elusive major title that has been within his reach for the last few seasons.

The Dark Horses

A rib issue that bugged him earlier this year has had times to heal, and Brandt Snedeker has been dominant at times this year when at full strength. He already has a win and two runner-up efforts, and his six top-10 finishes are tied for the most on the tour. Meanwhile, Snedeker has finished 11th or better in his last two U.S. Open appearances and has finished sixth or better in two of his last three major tournaments. More importantly, his game fits the course at Merion. Snedeker is known for his steady putter, and he currently ranks in the top 15 in both driving accuracy and greens hit in regulation. He has a history of success at par 3s and par 4s, giving him a great chance to carve up the East Course and come away with his first major title.

Sure, consistency has seemed to have disappeared form Rory McIlroy’s game these days, but he has also shown that his best is capable of winning any tournament at any course. Keep in mind that he won the U.S. Open in 2011 and the PGA Championship last year, and he has five top-three finishes in major tournaments since 2009. Granted, McIlroy hasn’t won a tournament of any kind in 2013, but he does have a second-place finish and four top-10s in nine starts. No, McIlory hasn’t been playing well enough to be considered the favorite, but he is way too dangerous to write off.

Speaking of a lack of consistency, Phil Mickelson is the ultimate boom or bust player, especially in the majors. This year alone, he has a win and four top-three finishes but failed to even crack the top 50 in The Masters. Still, his short game can be magical, and he could dissect the East Course if he can stay dialed in four the entire four days. Mickelson is a three-time major winner, and when he is on his game, he can still get the job done.

The Sleepers

He had a horrible showing in The Masters and missed the cut, but Graeme McDowell has still been one of the steadiest performers in the majors recently, especially at the U.S. Open. In fact, he finished in the top 12 of all four major tournaments last year, including a second-place finish in the U.S. Open. Not to mention the fact that McDowell’s lone major victory came in the U.S. Open in 2010 and has finished in the top 15 in the event in the last three years. He is also leading the tour in driving accuracy this year, which should pay huge dividends at a Merion course that requires precision. Don’t be surprised if he is in the mix for a second U.S. Open title.
