2013 British Open Championship Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Tiger Woods the Favorite: For the third time this year, the best golfers in the world will take aim at a major championship when the 2013 The Open Championship kicks off Thursday. The tournament is also known as the British Open, and it is the oldest of the four majors. It is also the only major not played in the United States. Muirfield in Scotland will be the site of this year’s tournament, and the bunker-laden course features some of the thickest roughs around to go along with plenty of other obstacles and traps that are just waiting to derail any golfer that tries to master it. For the lucky person that does conquer Muirfield, the Claret Jug awaits. The jug features the names of all of the past winners of The Open Championship, and along with the green jacket, it is definitely one of the more unique trophies handed out. With that in mind, here is a closer look at the golfers that have a chance to add their name to Claret Jug by winning the 2013 British Open.

The Favorites
While critics like to point out that Tiger Woods hasn’t won a major since 2008, his overall numbers in the events would still make just about any golfer jealous. Since his last major title, Woods has finished sixth or better in eight of the 15 major tournaments he has played in. He has also picked up a pair of top-five finishes in his last four major starts, including a third-place finish in last year’s British Open. Meanwhile, Woods has a tour-best four wins in 2013 and has been spectacular with his putter. Assuming his wrist is as healthy as he claims, he should be in the mix for the win on Sunday.
His win at the U.S. Open earlier this year was the first major title for Justin Rose, but his overall statistics say that it may not be his last. Heading into The Open Championship, he ranks in the top 15 in almost every category, including 11th or better in driving accuracy, scoring average and greens reached in regulation. Rose has the game to avoid the myriad of obstacles Muirfield’s course will throw his way, and he should only be more dangerous now that he has a major title under his belt.
Adam Scott had The Open Championship won last year, but he gave it away in devastatingly painful fashion, blowing a four-shot lead with four holes to play. The good news for Scott is that he has since rebounded by picking up his first major title with a win in the Masters earlier this year. Overall, he has finished in the top 15 in seven of the 10 major tournaments since 2011, and his formula of crushing the ball off the tee and consistency with the putter should continue to put him in contention at any course. Not to mention the fact that Scott has to be motivated to put last year’s collapse behind him by winning the Claret Jug in 2013.
The Dark Horses
Armed with plenty of power off the tee, Jason Day’s driver has nearly delivered him a pair of major title already this year. He finished third at the Masters earlier this year and settled for second in the U.S. Open, marking the third time he has been the runner-up in a major tournament since 2011. At just 25 years old, Day has already been within one or two shots of multiple major titles. There is no reason he can’t seal the deal at Muirfield.
Although he came out of nowhere to win the second Claret Jug of his career last season, Ernie Els has since experienced a rebirth of sorts at the majors and might just be able to defend his title. Els has finished in the top 15 in four of the last five majors, including finishes of 13th and fourth at the Masters and U.S. Open this season. This guy is nicknamed the “Big Easy” for a reason, and he has the game to handle a dangerous course like Muirfield and the nerves to handle the pressure of playing for a major.
The Sleeper
Bettors looking for a longshot to hoist the Claret Jug may want to take a chance on Nicolas Colsaerts. Sure, he has been inconsistent, but he leads the PGA Tour in driving distance this year so tends to have more chances the most for birdies and eagles. Whether or not he takes advantage of those opportunities remains to be seen, but he did finish seventh in last year’s British Open, and he was 10th at the U.S. Open earlier this year. Colsaerts will be able to count on his driver, and if the rest of his game holds up, he could become the latest in a long list of surprise major winners.
