2012 U.S. Open Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Favorites and Sleepers to Win U.S. Open

2012 U.S. Open Odds, Predictions and Free Picks – Favorites and Expert Picks to Win 2012 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club(Lake Course) – PGA Betting: Vegas Odds to win the 2012 U.S. Open starting Thursday, June 14th and wrapping up Sunday, June 17th at the Lake Course at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, California have been posted at the Las Vegas and online sportsbooks with Tiger Woods installed as the +615 favorite to win.

Beginning next Thursday, the PGA’s best will get their second chance of the year to win a major championship, when the tour heads to the Olympic Club for the 2012 U.S. Open. The tournament rotates between courses, making stops at such famous venues as Pebble Beach, Bethpage and Spyglass Hill. The last time the Olympic Club hosted the event was 1998, when Lee Janzen won the second of his two U.S. Open titles.

The tournament prides itself on fielding the most difficult course of the four major tournaments, and the Olympic Club will be no exception. Tough pin locations and thick roughs are a given, and this year’s event will be played on the club’s Lake Course, which is known for its tiny greens and tree-lined fairways. It also features three par-four holes more than 490 feet in length, and a pair of par-five holes that allow aggressive players to make a charge

The course has bested some of the all-time greats over the years. In 1966, Arnold Palmer gave away a seven-stroke lead in the final nine holes. Tom Watson faltered on the final day in 1987, and in 1998, Payne Stewart saw a four-shot lead disappear on Sunday. History says conquering the Olympic Club won’t be easy, and the lead will likely change hands on the final day of play.

The Favorites – 2012 U.S. Open Vegas Odds, Free Picks and Predictions

He hasn’t been playing his best golf heading into the U.S. Open, but Rory McIlroy is still the No. 2 golfer in the world. More importantly, he was nothing short of unstoppable at this tournament a year ago. He finished an incredible 16 strokes under par, winning his first major by eight shots and becoming the youngest winner of the event since 1923. Yes, this year’s event is at a different course, but there is still something to be said about the confidence that comes from winning a major. Expect McIlory to be fearless and confident as he attempts to defend his title.

Fresh of his fifth career win at the Memorial, Tiger Woods will set his sights on his fourth U.S. Open title. Granted, Woods won his last tournament before The Masters earlier this, only to finish a distant 40th, but his Memorial win was vintage Woods. He was hitting shot after shot in the final round, while the roar of the crowd intimidated the rest of the competition. He also has a 5.5 average finish at the U.S. Open when he has won his prior event. Woods is now tied with Jack Nicklaus for second on the all-time PGA win list with 73, but the real record he is after is Nicklaus’ 18 majors. He can move one step closer to that goal by winning the U.S. Open.

The Dark Horses – 2012 U.S. Open Vegas Odds, Free Picks and Predictions

It is incredible that Phil Mickelson has never won the U.S. Open. He has come so close to winning on so many occasions that it’s tough to keep track of all the ways ‘Lefty” has lost the tournament. From bad luck to bad decisions, it has been painful to watch some of his final round collapses. Mickelson has finished in the top 10 nine times at the U.S. Open, including five second-place finishes. While history says he won’t be able to close the deal, it also says he will be near the top of the leaderboard. At some point, the stars have to align for him. Don’t they?

His top-10 streak ended at the Memorial, but the Sunday surge from Tiger Woods had a lot to do with Rickie Fowler’s meltdown. He wasn’t the first, and he won’t be the last golfer to come unhinged playing alongside Woods. Bad round aside, the 23 year old has four top-10s in his last five tournaments leading up to the U.S. Open, including a win. He is playing as well as any golfer on the tour right now, and he should only be better prepared for the pressures of a major thanks to his encounter with Woods. Fowler missed the cut in his last two U.S. Open appearances, but all the signs point to this blossoming young player having a career performance at the Olympic Club.

The Sleeper – 2012 U.S. Open Vegas Odds, Free Picks and Predictions

He is on the unfortunate list of top players that have yet to win a major, but Matt Kuchar has been inching closer to changing that in recent years. The sixth-ranked golfer in the world has finished sixth and 14th in his last to U.S. Open appearances. During the same two-year span, Kuchar has also notched a top-10 finish at the PGA Championship and finished third at The Masters earlier this year. He is leading the PGA Tour in scoring average in 2012, and he is finally learning how to compete at the majors with his solid all-around game. He could break through at the Olympic Club.

Big Name to Avoid – 2012 U.S. Open Vegas Odds, Free Picks and Predictions

He is the top-ranked golfer according to the World Golf Rankings, but Luke Donald has had a bad habit of coming up small in majors, especially at the U.S. Open. His best finish at the tournament came in 2006 when he finished 12th.  Since then, he has withdrawn once, missed the cut twice, and finished 47th and 45th the last two seasons. Donald is no doubt a solid player, and three of his five career PGA wins have come in 2011 and 2012. However, it often takes time to develop the mindset needed to compete in the majors. Donald is still working on that, and as uncompetitive as he has been at the U.S. Open, it is hard to imagine him making the leap at winning the tournament this year.
