2011 Masters Odds, Lines and Preview: Favorites to Win and Players to Bet On to Win the 2011 Green Jacket: It has been called a tradition unlike any other, and beginning Thursday, the best golfers in the world will begin their quest to win the 75th Masters championship. Arguably the most coveted prize in golf, four days at legendary Augusta National will decide the 2011 winner. Golfing immortality and the famous green jacket are up for grabs for the golfers, but bettors have their shot at some green as well.
This year’s course is considered rather friendly to the heavy hitters in the field. The fairways are wide and the rough is relatively forgiving compared to other courses. Golfers will need to bring their short game to handle some tricky greens, but the golfers that are long off the tee can take some of the difficulty out of the chipping and putting that will be needed to win.
The Favorites to Win the 2011 Masters
Phil Mickelson(+650 odds to Win) hasn’t been playing his best golf lately, but his record at Augusta can’t be denied. Not only is he the defending winner of the event, but he has put on the green jacket three times in his career. Since 1999, Mickelson has finished outside the top-five at Augusta only three times. In other words, he is a safe bet to be in the mix for a win.
Not only is he the No. 2 golfer in the world right now, but Lee Westwood(+1200 odds to Win) also finished second in last year’s Masters. He is still looking for his first major win, but he has been in the mix going into the final 18 holes on multiple occasions. Westwood has all the tools as evidence by his world ranking. He just needs to break through in a big event, and Westwood was on the doorstep of a Masters win last year.
He is ranked in the top-10 in the world, and for the couple of seasons, Matt Kuchar(+3000 odds to Win) has been playing the best golf of his career. He possesses arguably the best short game on the tour today, ranking in the top-five in scoring average and fewest putts required. Kuchar’s game is built to handle the tricky greens like those at Augusta. He was seventh in last year’s event, and he could threaten for the win in 2011.
Potential “Sleepers” to Bet On at the 2011 Masters
Have you ever heard of this Tiger Woods(+850 odds to Win) guy? His swing and mindset could both use fixing, but how can you count out the four-time Masters winner. Despite being mired in the longest slump of his career, Woods did manage a fourth-place finish in last year’s event. Not to mention the fact that he hasn’t finished outside the top-10 at the Masters since 2004. Struggling or not, Woods can’t be written off at Augusta.
He is going to need to have to hope his putter holds up over the course of the weekend, but Dustin Johnson(+2000 odds to Win) has a punchers chance at Augusta thanks to his power off the tee. He can drive the ball with the best of them, which will help offset his mediocre short game. If Johnson can get enough putts to go, he could pull off the upset.
If you are looking for a golfer with a hot hand heading to Augusta, Nick Watney(+1500 odds to Win) could be your man. He has finished in the top-10 in five of his six PGA starts in 2011, including a win. His improved short game has been the key to his success, and he has always been long off the tee. If Watney can put it all together and ride his recent momentum, he could grab the biggest win of his career.
PGA Players to Avoid Betting on the 2011 Masters
He is currently the No. 1 golfer in the world, but Martin Kaymer(+1600 odds to Win) could have trouble tackling the Masters. He likes to fade the ball, but that style of play doesn’t work well at Augusta National. Kaymer is definitely a talented golfer, but it tough to buy that he can win a tournament like the Masters not playing to his strength.
There is no denying that Rory McIlroy(+2000 odds to Win) has flashed some serious talent since becoming a part of the PGA Tour in 2007. However, he hasn’t exactly shown the mental toughness to close out tournaments, let alone win a prestigious event like the Masters. His meltdown at the Dubai Desert Classic earlier this season is a perfect example of how quickly his game can go south. McIlroy just isn’t ready for the big time yet.
