2011 British Open Favorites: McIlroy the Favorite to Win – Latest Vegas Odds, Predictions, and Free Picks: US Open winner Rory McIlroy and a host of Europeans are the favorites to win the 2011 British Open which starts on Thursday at Royal St. George’s in Sandwich, England and can be seen starting at 4:00 AM ET on ESPN. Coming off a seemingly easy 8 stroke victory in the US Open last month the 22 year old Northern Irishman is golfs new wonder kid that will save golf from the absence of Tiger Woods. For the last decade Woods has been the favorite in every major with Phil Mickelson usually a close 2nd, but with Tiger injured and Phil playing less than spectacular the European players are getting the attention this week.
McIlroy has not played since the US Open and only put in a 9 hole practice round at Royal St. George’s up to today which doesn’t compute to a winning formula in my book. Vegas odds makers have Rory McIlroy a +550 favorite to win the British Open at Royal St. George’s.
England’s Lee Westwood briefly held the number 1 spot in the World Rankings and has played well in the Majors but did not finish quite well enough to win and has Vegas odds makers giving him +700 odds to win the Open.
Current No. 1 Luke Donald a fellow countryman who is having a stellar year and his consistent ball striking and iron play has Vegas odds makers having him a +900 favorite to win the Open. Rounding out the top 5 favorites by Vegas odds makers to win are Martin Kaymer +1100 and Graeme McDowell +1200.
The lone American among the top 10 favorites is Mickelson who has dropped to No. 6 in the World Golf Rankings and struggling to win therefore odds makers have Phil at +1750 to win at Royal St. George’s.
Another young American player I like this week is Dustin Johnson who was close in a couple majors in 2010 and has the long game and touch to score on an Open course like St. George’s this week. Odds makers have Johnson at +1700 to win the 2011 British Open.
Two others with a shot to get their first major victory are young Rickie Fowler +6000 and big hitting Bubba Watson with 2 victories this year at +2500 odds to win the 2011 British open at Royal St. George’s.
