New England Patriots 2010 NFL Preview, Schedule, Odds, and Predictions: All is not well in Foxboro with the New England Patriots after a pretty good 2009 regular season at 10-6 with quarterback Tom Brady returning from knee surgery, but the Pats got embarrassed in the playoffs losing 33-14 at home in the wild card round. Head football coach Bill Belichick fired their defensive coordinator and is rumored to be taking a larger role in the defense for 2010. Vegas odds makers have the New England Patriots +850 odds to win the 2011 Super Bowl for Brady and Belichick’s fourth ring.
Coach Belichick has gotten a lot of accolades for winning 3 Super Bowls in 4 years and guiding his team to a perfect 16-0 regular season record. He deserves them even if he did have tremendous talent and an outstanding ownership group behind him. This year will test his metal to see how he responds with lesser and younger talent, an aging quarterback who is less mobile, and no official offensive or defensive coordinators. The odds makers at BetUS have the New England Patriots listed at +500 odds to win the 2010 AFC Championship.
Offensively the Patriots still have Tom Brady and Randy Moss, a touchdown combination that is still hard to defend. Brady is in the last year of his contract and there is no sign that the Pats are doing anything to lock him in to an extension (big mistake). Brady is saying all the right things outwardly, but he has to be upset at the lack of loyalty, especially with the rival Indianapolis Colts talking about making Payton Manning the highest paid player. Running backs Fred Taylor, Kevin Faulk and Sammy Morris are all in their 30’s and Laurence Maroney has largely been a disappointment. The Vegas odds makers have the New England Patriots listed at -115 NFL Betting odds to win the 2010 AFC East.
The Patriots have lived off their defense through the glory years and after trading Richard Seymour the line has not been dominant. Second-round draft pick Brandon Spikes will be looked to start immediately at inside linebacker and become an impact player and leader as he was for the Florida Gators. There are other holes that need filled as well for the defense to improve, but the secondary appears solid. The odds makers at BetUS have the New England Patriots middle number listed at over/under 9 1/2 wins for the 2010 NFL regular season.
The Patriots have had a really great run but have a lot of obstacles to overcome to continue in an improving AFC East. The Jets and Dolphins are getting better, Buffalo stinks, and I look for the Pats to finish third in 2010 with even more questions after they miss the playoffs and finish 8-8.
