Monday Night NFL Preseason Picks: Chicago Bears @ NY Giants 2011 NFL Preseason Vegas Odds, Free Picks, and Expert Predictions on ESPN 8/22/11: The Bears have been focusing on their offensive line all week and believe they may finally have the kinks worked out in time for their second tune up prior to the regular season. The Bears were absolutely manhandled on the offensive line last game against the Buffalo Bills and many were beginning to question the potential of the Windy City O. Mike Martz has publicly stated all week that his offense is fine and the line problems are just the result of new personnel and lack of preparation. On the other side of the ball the Bears looked solid as always and it looks as though it will be the defense called on this year to guide them back to the postseason. The ex-Cowboy tandem of Marian Barber and Roy Williams has done little to impress thus far and must pick up their games in a hurry to avert ridicule. Williams has even publicly stated that he is not in football shape as of yet, which has been a hard pill to swallow for the majority of Bears nation. Going into this regular season the Bears may arguably be the projected 4th club in the highly contested NFC North and they will have to rely on their solid defensively play and timely offense if they have any postseason aspirations.
The Giants may have endured the most grueling of off seasons and appear to be stepping into this season with some serious concerns with their receivers and defensive line. The Giants were stymied offensively by a ball hawking Panthers defense last week, but Eli Manning believes in his offense and feels that it was just the result of the long time off and new personnel growing pains. The loss of Steve Smith and loss of reacquiring Plaxico Burress really showed up in their first tune up last week as Eli Manning had issues finding open receivers. With Osi Umenyiora being shelved for up to a month after undergoing knee surgery last week means the Giants defensively line will have to be even more creative in getting to the ball carrier and quarterback. The Giants have long been known for their excellent play along the defensively line and it will be imperative for this unit to hold their own early in the regular season prior to Osi’s return. Now with the NFC East being the arguable most toughest division in football, the Giants will have to jump out of the gates fast and it all hinges on Eli finding some kind of cohesion with his “no-name” receiving core.
Our complimentary selection in tonight’s second Monday night tilt of the NFL preseason will be the New York Giants and the points. After publicly stating this past week that he deserves consideration in the Brady echelon of quarterbacks, Eli Manning now knows he has to go out and back up that statement. Week 1 of the preseason slate of games saw the Bears and Giants stumble offensively, but play stout defensively. The Bears have serious concerns along their offensively line after the departure of Olen Kreutz as witnessed in their first preseason tilt against the Bills. Cutler was pressured, hurried, and sacked many times in his few series of play and there appears to be no relief in sight. The Giants are a good football club and they have the personnel in place to contend for the NFC East title, even with a revamped Eagles club. I expect Eli Manning to come out firing tonight and he will want to put points up in each of his 2-3 series, anything less and the New York faithful will be up in arms all week. We will consider the Giants silencing their early season critics with an impressive victory in front of their home faithful tonight. Cheers!
