2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Odds – Favorites, Value Bets and Sleepers to Win: The NFL preseason is officially underway, and as we head towards Week 1 of the regular season, it is time to start finalizing your futures bets for 2019. Hope always springs eternal in the NFL, and every year, fans turn to rookies as the potential saviors of their franchises.
Of course, not all rookies contribute right away, or ever for that matter, but a few special newcomers are able to produce on the field from Day 1. For these players, the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award could be waiting for them at the end of the season.
Over the years, running backs have absolutely dominated OROY honors, winning 34 times in 52 tries. Quarterbacks and receivers have both won the award nine times each, and no other position has ever earned the honor.
2019 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Odds: Favorites, Value Bets and Sleepers to Win
The Favorites
Kyler Murray, QB, Arizona Cardinals (+175)
The No. 1 pick in the draft has emerged as the overwhelming favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, and it’s not hard to see why. He is going to be the unquestioned starter from Day 1, which immediately makes him one of the top betting options. Plus, his dual-threat ability makes him the ideal fit to run the up-tempo, pass-happy attack that new head coach Kliff Kingsbury is attempting to unleash on the NFL. Whether it translates to wins remains to be seen, but if Murray stays healthy, I think it translates to gawdy offensive numbers. Voters aren’t going to care about wins so much if Murray is setting rookie records for yards and touchdowns.
Dwayne Haskins, QB, Washington Redskins (+650)
Haskins is not guaranteed to start immediately, but with no other long-term answers at quarterback on Washington’s roster, you can expect to see him under center for most of the season. His supporting cast isn’t elite by any means, but Haskins will at least have the platform to put up steady numbers at the league’s most important position. Needless to say, he has a leg up on most of the other rookies.
Josh Jacobs, RB, Oakland Raiders (+700)
I mentioned in the introduction that running backs have dominated the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award over the years, and the rookie back with the clearest path to a major role is Jacobs. The first-round pick out of Alabama should slide into an every-down role for the Raiders, and Jon Gruden has never been shy about leaning on his rookie rushers. I don’t think 250-plus touches is out of the question for Jacobs, and the volume alone should give him some of the best offensive numbers of any rookie. After Kyler Murray, I think Jacobs is your best bet if you are looking to play it safe.
Value Bets
David Montgomery, RB, Chicago Bears (+2000)
Oddsmakers seem to be sleeping on Montgomery a bit, likely because the presence of Tarik Cohen will limit him to early-down work as a rookie. However, Jordan Howard was also limited to early-down work in his rookie year, but he still ran for more than 1,300 yards. Montgomery is set to slide into Howard’s role in Chicago’s offense, and given how strong the Bears should be on defense, there is a good chance Montgomery will get a lot of the extra touches late in games to help close out wins. Not to mention the fact that if something were to happen to Cohen, Montgomery has the skills to play on every down.
D.K. Metcalf, WR, D.K. Metcalf (+2200)
His combine performance was the stuff of legends, and Metcalf’s blend of size, speed and athleticism is rare, even by NFL standards. The knock against him is that his numbers on the field never matched his physical tools because of a limited route tree and raw technique. Those criticisms may be fair, but Seattle uses a run-heavy offense that likes to push the ball down the field in the passing game, and they have one of the best in the business at throwing the deep ball in Russell Wilson. You don’t need a refined route tree to sprint down the field and outmuscle defensive backs on deep balls. Metcalf is a perfect fit for this offense, and if ends up with eight-plus scores and a list of highlight-reel plays as a rookie, he’s going to be in the mix for Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
Sleeper Special
Darrell Henderson, RB, Los Angeles Rams (+3000)
Henderson will likely be an all-or-nothing bet, but at +3000, you are getting a player who is one twinge in Todd Gurley’s arthritic knee away from being one of the main weapons in one of the league’s best offenses. Henderson might be the most explosive back among this crop of rookies, and he has the skills to be an every-down back if called upon. Everybody knows Gurley’s health is a major question mark entering this season. Among the players getting longer odds, Henderson is easily your best bet.
