2019 NFC West Division Predictions and Odds to Win
1. Los Angeles Rams(-180 odds at Bovada)
The Rams were the popular pick to win the Super Bowl last preseason and almost delivered. Head coach Sean McVay got the Rams to the Super Bowl in just his 2nd season as head coach but lost 13-3 to New England. McVay is now an impressive 24-8 after two full seasons on the job and the Rams look to be a Super Bowl contender again this season. The Rams offense finished 2nd in the NFL in total offense last season putting up 421.1 yards per game. They were also 2nd in scoring at 32.9 points per game. Quarterback Jared Goff continues to get better in McVay’s system as he threw for 4,688 yards and 32 touchdowns last season against 12 interceptions. As long as Goff continues to improve than the Rams offense will continue to be one of the best in the league. The concern for the Rams this season is if their defense will be stout enough to get them back to the Super Bowl. Defensive tackle Aaron Donald is the best defensive player in the NFL but he can only do so much. The Rams defense finished 19th in the NFL in total defense last season and are depending on some ageing vets to play key roles. Cornerback Aqib Talib, safety Eric Weddle and OLB Clay Matthews have played a lot of down in their NFL careers and they’ll need to stay healthy and play at a high level if the Rams want to have a Super Bowl caliber defense.
2. Seattle Seahawks(+275 odds at Bovada)
The Seahawks went 10-6 last season and made the playoffs after missing out in 2017. Head coach Pete Carroll is 89-51-1 in his Seattle career so far and continues to have the Seahawks as one of the toughest outs in the league every postseason. Seattle is in great hands with quarterback Russell Wilson who is the most underrated quarterback in the NFL in our eyes. Wilson is a flat out stud and big time player. He threw for 3,448 yards and 35 touchdowns against just 7 interceptions last season. You rarely hear Wilson’s name mentioned in NFL MVP conversations or mentioned with the elite quarterbacks like Brady, Rodgers, Brees and Mahomes. However, make no mistake, Wilson is that good and can play with anyone. The Seahawks haven’t surrounded Wilson with the best weapons but he finds ways to get it done. Defensively, the Seahawks had the NFL’s 16th total defense last season and used 3 of their first 4 picks in the NFL Draft on that side of the ball. The defense probably won’t be much better but it won’t be any worse either. All in all, we think Seattle is not a true Super Bowl contender this season but they won’t be a team that anyone wants to see in the postseason as Wilson is capable of pulling out a victory against anyone he faces.
3. San Francisco 49ers(+550 odds at Bovada)
The 49ers went just 4-12 last season after coming in with high expectations. However, a season ending injury to Jimmy Garoppolo(aka Glass-oppolo) put and end to any big 49ers dreams early last season. The 49ers gave this guy the biggest NFL contract in the league for a quarterback last offseason and we still don’t understand why. What’s he ever done other than look great early in the season(with New England) or late in the season(with San Francisco) when there has been no pressure? He’s also proven to be made out of glass as he’s always hurt and on the shelf. Ya, we get it, the guy has a lot of talent but we like guys that actually deliver when it counts. Having said all that, the 49ers have surrounded him with speed and talent that can blossom and turn into something special. Tight end George Kittle had a huge year last season catching 88 balls for 1,377 yards and 5 touchdowns. We also like their 2nd rd draft pick Deebo Samuel out of South Carolina. On defense, the 49ers added defensive end Nick Bosa in the NFL Draft with the 2nd pick overall and he should be a stud. They also added defensive end Dee Ford in a trade with Kansas City to improve their pass rush. The 49ers should be in the hunt for a NFC Wild Card this season if Glass-oppolo doesn’t break and shatter once again.
4. Arizona Cardinals(+2500 odds at Bovada)
The Cardinals went back to the drawing board after last year’s 3-13 record. They brought in new head coach Kliff Klingsbury from Texas Tech to run the show and used the #1 pick in the NFL Draft on quarterback Kyler Murray out of Oklahoma. Call us haters but we aren’t fans of either guy. Klingsbury was known for running an explosive offense in college at Texas Tech and coached Pat Mahomes there. However, what the hell did he ever win? The guy may have a great offensive mind but he’s not top notch head coaching material. Meanwhile, can Murray get it done in the NFL at his height? We’ve seen this guy in person and we aren’t buying anyone telling us he’s any taller than 5-8. The guy is short as hell and will need some super duper cleats to see over the line trying to read defenses in the middle of the field. We aren’t sold on this guy being consistent long-term. He should have some monster games and highlight reel plays due to his athleticsm but he just won’t get it done in the pocket enough to take a team anywhere year in and year out. Defensively, the Cardinals have a lot of work to do. It’s going to be another long year in the desert for Cardinals fans.
