2019 AFC West Division Predictions and Odds to Win
1. Kansas City Chiefs(-155odds at Bovada)
The Chiefs are coming off of another AFC West Division title as they went 12-4 last season and reached the AFC Title Game. They ended up losing to eventual Super Bowl Champion New England 37-31 in overtime at home. The Chiefs look poised to make another deep run in the playoffs this season and many experts are picking them to win the Super Bowl. We aren’t quite believers in the Chiefs being Super Bowl Champion caliber but we are believers in quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes took the NFL by storm last season in his first year as a starter as he won the NFL MVP after throwing for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns against just 12 interceptions. The kid is the real deal and should be arguably the best quarterback in the NFL for years to come. Having said that, it shouldn’t surprise anyone to see him come down a notch this season from last year’s historic numbers. The rest of the NFL has plenty of game tape on him now and it’s just not easy to dominate the NFL year after year in the way he did last season. However, make no mistake, the Chiefs will still have one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses as long as he and tight end Travis Kelce are healthy. The real concern for the Chiefs is their defense. It was the weak link last season and the Chiefs decided to overhaul it in the offseason. The jury is out on whether it will be much improved but we do like the additions of veteran defensive end Frank Clark and safety Tyrann Mathieu.
2. Los Angeles Chargers(+195 odds at Bovada)
The Chargers surprised many last season as they ended up going 12-4 and winning a wild card playoff game at Baltimore before getting their doors blown off at New England in the AFC Divisional Round Playoff. Many experts like the Chargers to be better this season but we aren’t sold. For starters, we aren’t big fans of quarterback Philip Rivers. Sure, he’s one of the toughest quarterbacks in the league and he’s a gamer. However, is he really much better than a slightly above average quarterback. Does Philip Rivers ever scare an opposing defense and keep defensive coordinators up at night getting ready to face him? We don’t see it. He’s nothing but a tease that gets on heaters but the other shoe always drops eventually with this guy. The real cause for optimism with the Chargers is their defense. It ranked 9th in the NFL in total defense and was a strength before getting exposed at New England when it allowed 35 first half points in the playoffs. We expect the defense to continue to improve and it’s the reason why we like the Chargers to get back into the playoffs. Just don’t expect Philip Rivers to take them far when they get there.
3. Oakland Raiders(+1100 odds at Bovada)
The Raiders were a dismal 4-12 last season in the first year under head coach Jon Gruden in his return to the Raiders sideline. Oakland hired a new GM in Mike Mayock late last season and we like what he accomplished this past NFL Draft and free agency. The Raiders landed some high quality character football players in the draft led by the three 1st rd picks, DE Clelin Ferrell, RB Josh Jacobs and Safety Jonathan Abram. Look for all three players to play a significant role this season as the Raiders look to form an identity of tough, disciplined and intelligent football players unlike the team fielded last season. We also loved the signing of tackle Trent Brown along with the trade for wide receiver Antonio Brown to give the Raiders offense two talented studs who should help turn the NFL’s 23rd ranked total offense around. There is a lot to like with the direction the Raiders are headed in and we feel that Mayock and Gruden are going to get this franchise into the AFC Playoffs next year, if not this season. The defense was just 26th in the NFL last season but Mayock used 5 of the Raiders first 6 picks in the first 4 rounds of the NFL Draft on defense. Look for the defense to be improved especially by late this season.
4. Denver Broncos(+1200 odds at Bovada)
The Broncos went 6-10 last season and John Elway decide he had seen enough. Elway has brought in new head coach Vic Fangio to run the show and has given him a couple new quarterbacks to work with. The Broncos traded away quarterback Case Keenum to Washington, traded for former Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco and used a 2nd rd draft pick on qb Drew Lock out of Missouri. Denver’s offense has been mediocre for the past 4 seasons now and ranked 19th in the NFL last season. Despite all the changes we still aren’t sold on the offense being much improved this season. For starters, we aren’t big fans of Flacco. He’s always been a middle of the pack quarterback in our eyes and he’s long in the tooth now. How much does he have left and how will he adjust to his new surroundings? Lock is a rookie with plenty to work on so don’t expect much from him this season. The good news is the Broncos defense still has OLB Von Miller who is still one of the best in the business. We liked the addition of free agent cornerback Kareem Jackson from Houston too. The defense finished 22nd in the NFL last season and should be improved. The problem is the offense won’t be. Look for another sub .500 record in Denver.
