2018 NFL NFC North Odds & Expert Picks/Predictions – NFC North Division Forecast
1. Green Bay Packers(+125 odds to win NFC North at Bovada) – The Packers are coming off of a terrible 7-9 season that had them out of the NFC Playoffs. The main reason the Packers missed the playoffs was the season ending injury to star quarterback Aaron Rodgers that had him miss half the season. Rodgers returns healthy in 2018 and he is still arguably the best player in the NFL when he’s playing at the top of his game. The future hall-of-Famer has some nice weapons at his disposal on offense including wideouts Randall Cobb and Davante Adams. The Packers should easily be among the top 10 offenses in the NFL after finishing just 26th in total offense last season. The biggest question mark for the Packers is once again the defense that has let them down for so many years now. The defense finished just 22nd in total defense last season but hopefully will be improved after the front office used their top 3 picks in the NFL Draft on that side of the ball. The Packers don’t have the best overall team in the division but they have Rodgers who is the ultimate difference maker.
2. Minnesota Vikings(+120 odds to win NFC North at Bovada) – The Vikings won the NFC North Division last season after going 13-3 overall and ended up making the NFC Championship Game where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles. The Vikings decided to let quarterback Case Keenum go in free agency and signed former Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins to run the offense. Cousins is better then Keenum and should be a better long-term fit for Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer who never seemed sold on Keenum as the long-term answer. The Vikings should be one of the top 10 offenses in the NFL but it’s the defense that really sets the Vikings apart from the rest of the division. The defense finished number one in the NFL last year in total defense and should challenge for the top spot again this season.
3. Chicago Bears(+650 odds to win NFC North at Bovada) – The Bears are coming off of a 5-11 season and brought in a new head coach in Matt Nagy for 2018. Nagy inherits a roster full of holes but a talented young signal caller in 2nd year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky who flashed signs of being a potential big time player last season. Trubisky got his feet wet last year by throwing 330 times with 196 completions for 2193 yards and 7 touchdowns against 7 interceptions. The stats don’t tell the whole story as Trubisky looked a lot better then the naysayers said he would after the Bears took him so high in the 1st round. The Bears offense finished just 30th in the NFL last season but expect some improvement this season with Trubisky entering year two and Nagy being a better fit for him with his offensive background. The defense was a solid 10th in the NFL in total defense last season and should be solid again this year.
4. Detroit Lions(+800 odds to win NFC North at Bovada) – The Lions start a new era with head coach Matt Patricia who was hired after being the defensive coordinator for years for the New England Patriots. Patricia learned a lot under Bill Belichick and the Lions hope he can bring that winning formula to the Motor City. Patricia inherits a roster needing some work but has a few solid pieces to build around including veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. Stafford is coming off of an outstanding 2017 season that saw him throw for 4446 yards and 29 touchdowns against just 10 interceptions. The Lions finished 9-7 overall last season despite having a defense that finished just 27th in the NFL in total defense. Patricia hopes to get that corrected and get the Lions back to the playoffs but that will be easier said then done as the Lions appear a year away from retooling the defense enough to get back to the postseason.
