2017 NFL Picks & Betting Predictions Week 1 – Bet On Oakland Raiders @ Tennessee Titans
Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio has done a fantastic job since taking over a terrible Raiders team that was coming off of a 3-13 season in 2014. Del Rio is 19-13 after 2 seasons including a 12-4 season last year as the Raiders made it back to the playoffs for the first time since 2002. Now we see how Del Rio can coach with a target on the team’s back as the Raiders enter the 2017 season with realistic Super Bowl hopes.
The Raiders are a +160 favorite to win the AFC West Division and carry +700 odds to win the AFC plus +1000 odds to win the 2018 Super Bowl. The Raiders are projected to be one of the top 5 teams in the entire NFL this season according to the odds makers in Las Vegas and at the top USA betting sites.
The main reason for the hype surrounding the Raiders is quarterback Derek Carr. You can’t win consistently in the NFL without an elite quarterback and the Raiders look to have found a franchise quarterback for the next decade in Carr. The 26 year-old gun slinger out of Fresno State took his game to the next level last season when he threw for 3937 yards and 28 touchdowns with only 6 interceptions. Add that to a defense that has the NFL’s best defensive player in defensive end Khalil Mack and you have a team that is loaded with playmakers that can make this a storybook season for the Oakland fans starving for one more title before the Raiders move to Las Vegas.
The Tennessee Titans don’t come into the 2017 NFL season with the lofty expectations and buzz the Raiders do but that could all change in a hurry with Tennessee being one of our top sleeper picks this season. Head coach Mike Mularkey has the Titans headed in the right direction after they tripled their win total from 2015 by going 9-7 last season.
Much like Oakland, the Titans have found themselves a young stud quarterback to build around for the next decade in Marcus Mariota. The 23 year-old former 1st overall pick in the NFL Draft is every bit as talented as Carr and probably more so. The kid can do it all and he’s coming off of a fantastic 2nd year in the NFL that saw him throw for 3426 yards and 26 touchdowns with only 9 picks last season. Mariota, like Carr, is coming off of a terrible end to his season last year as he too was lost for the season with a week 16 broken right fibula injury against Jacksonville.
Tennessee comes into the season tied with Houston at +175 odds to win the AFC South Division along with +1800 odds to win the AFC. They carry +4000 odds to win Super Bowl 2018. Those odds will surely go up as the season moves along in our opinion. Tennessee is closer to being one of the top 7-8 teams in the NFL then they are a middle of the pack squad. Mariota is the reason why as he can be one of the top 5 quarterbacks in the NFL this season.
Tennessee finished 11th in the NFL in total offense last season at 358 yards per game and they should be better this season with Mariota playing in his 3rd NFL season and the addition of 1st round pick, wide receiver Corey Davis. Defensively, the Titans should also be much improved from last year’s 20th ranked defense with the additions of some nice draft picks and the signing of some good veterans like cornerback Logan Ryan from New England.
In this clash between two of the NFL’s best up and coming rosters, our money is going down on Tennessee at home. Mariota is the real deal and he will be able to match Carr on Sunday. This game is pretty evenly matched but the home crowd and the fact that Oakland has a target on it’s back this season gives us reason to bet on the Titans in this game. The Titans want to show the NFL they are legit and they make a statement in week 1 with a win over the Raiders.
