2017 NFL Mock Draft – Updated Top 10 after the Scouting Combine: The NFL offseason is in full swing, and while teams are busy signing free agents, they are also busy preparing for the 2017 NFL Draft. Last weekend in Indianapolis, prospects flocked to the NFL Scouting Combine, hoping to boost their value in the eyes of NFL general managers. Some players accomplished just that while others ended up hurting their stock. On the heels of the combine, I’ve updated my projected top 10 picks for 2017 NFL Draft.
- Cleveland Browns: Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M
The combine confirmed what league personnel already knew. Garrett is an athletic marvel, and he all the tools to be a game-changing pass-rusher. I know Cleveland needs a quarterback, but I can’t see the Browns passing on Garrett after the performance he put on in Indianapolis.
- San Francisco 49ers: Jonathan Allen, DE/DT Alabama
The combine brought concerns about his shoulders, but it sounds like any issues will occur well after he is done playing football. Allen was dominant at the point of attack in college, stopping the run and getting after the quarterback. Adding him to the mix would suddenly make San Francisco’s defensive front very interesting.
- Chicago Bears: Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State
Chicago was below average against the pass, and only the Jacksonville Jaguars had fewer interceptions. Lattimore just wowed scouts at the combine with his athleticism, and he has the physical tools to be a playmaking, shutdown corner.
- Jacksonville Jaguars: Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford
The defense is putting all the pieces in place to be a dominant unit, and adding one more physical presence up front could bring it all together. Thomas is an absolute force along the defensive front, and he should take the pass rush to another level.
- Tennessee Titans: Malik Hooker, S, Ohio State
The Titans need to upgrade their secondary, and although Hooker was unable to participate in the combine, I still think the Titans will grab him. His instincts remind scouts of Ed Reed.
- New York Jets: Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson Tigers
Some team in the top 10 is going to take a chance on a quarterback, and I think the Jets take a swing on Watson. By all accounts, he wowed teams during the interview process at the combine, and if any of the QB prospects are ready to play on a big stage like New York, it’s Watson.
- San Diego Chargers: Jamal Adams, S, LSU
His combine numbers weren’t great, but Adams has enough quality tape that shows he is a versatile safety who can play in the box or drop back in space. Adams also addresses one of San Diego’s biggest needs.
- Carolina Panthers: Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU
Carolina could use an offensive lineman, but any of the prospects would be a reach with this pick. Fournette is not a bad alternative, especially since he just showed at the combine that he has the power-speed combo everyone expected. Teaming Fournette with Cam Newton should revitalize Carolina’s offense.
- Cincinnati Bengals: Reuben Foster, LB, Alabama
Cincinnati’s defense has been at a different level when Vontaze Burfict has been healthy, but that’s happening less and less. Foster is a do-it-all linebacker who can immediately solidify the middle of the unit.
- Buffalo Bills: John Ross, WR, Washington
Ross isn’t the most complete receiver in this draft, but after breaking the 40-yard dash record, it’s clear that he can take the top off a defense. The homerun threat will help open things up for Buffalo’s power ground game, and recently re-signed quarterback Tyrod Taylor has been known to throw a good deep ball.
