2016 Super Bowl 50 Picks and Predictions – Denver Broncos vs Carolina Panthers Expert Picks: The 2015 NFL season wraps up next Sunday, February 7th, 2016 from Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco with Super Bowl 50 that pits the Denver Broncos against the Carolina Panthers. The odds makers in Las Vegas opened Carolina as -4 point favorites with the game total listed at over/under 45 points but the money has been pouring in on Carolina and the line currently stands this morning at Carolina -6 and over/under 45.5 points at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
The Carolina Panthers arrived to Super Bowl 50 by winning the NFC Championship Game in impressive 49-15 fashion over the Arizona Cardinals at home in Charlotte, NC. The Panthers are now 17-1 overall this season and look to be an unstoppable force that won’t be denied from winning their first ever Lombardi Trophy. The Panthers have arguably the NFL’s best player and certainly the MVP of the 2015 NFL season in quarterback Cam Newton. Newton had a 99.4 QB rating this regular season as he threw for 35 touchdowns against only 10 interceptions and had 3,837 yards passing with a 59.8 percent completion percentage. However, what seperates Newton from other elite quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady is his ability to impact the game on the ground. Newton rushed for 636 yards and 10 touchdowns this season and his ability to escape the pressure and move the chains on the ground when opposing defenses have his receivers covered is what makes Carolina’s offense so difficult to contain.
On the other side of the field in Super Bowl 50 will be the Denver Broncos who punched their ticket to the big game by taking out the New England Patriots 20-18 at home in Denver, CO. The Broncos defense was the story of that game and has been the story of the 2015 Broncos season as they are arguably the best defense in the NFL and have carried Denver despite getting subpar quarterback play virtually all season from Peyton Manning and backup Brock Osweiler. The Broncos are 14-4 overall on the season but one has to wonder if they would be here at all if they had to leave home in the playoffs and go on the road to New England for the AFC Championship Game. Despite hitting Tom Brady a record number of time for any NFL quarterback since 2007 the Broncos still had to hang on for dear life at the end of the game and stop a 2 point conversion from New England that would have tied the game and probably have sent New England to the Super Bowl as Denver’s offense was completely inept in the 2nd half of that AFC Title game and would have had trouble in overtime.
The bottom line in this Super Bowl 50 matchup is both teams have outstanding defenses and basically that is a wash as far as we se it. However, Carolina has a significant edge at the quarterback position as Newton is such a one man wrecking crew that he will be tough to figure out and contain for 60 minutes against a Broncos defense that has seen nobody like him all season. That will be the deciding difference in this game and on the other side the Broncos will have a very tough time moving the ball with Manning who is a shell of his former self. This game has blowout written all over it in the 2nd half after Carolina opens up a sizeable lead and Denver is forced to abandon the run game and start airing it out to get back in the game.
Prediction: Carolina Panthers -6 Cover the Spread
