2014 NFL Free Agency Recap: Top 5 Biggest Losers: The NFL’s free agency period is open for business, and the action has been fast and furious with big names quickly finding new homes. Of course, not every team is successful when it comes to courting free agents, and this year has been no exception. Meanwhile, ill-advised signings can be just as harmful as being idle, and some teams have made some questionable signings thus far. With that in mind, here is a closer look at the teams that have been the biggest losers in free agency in 2014.
1. Kansas City Chiefs
Free agency has been rough for the Chiefs to say the least. Coming off a playoff appearance, Kansas City has lost six starters, including three from the offensive line. For a team whose best weapon is running back Jamaal Charles, losing 60 percent of the starting offensive line is a very bad thing. Losing versatile offensive weapon Dexter McCluster could also take its toll. The Chiefs are really going to have to work some magic to return to the postseason in 2014.
2. Oakland Raiders
You have to feel bad for Oakland fans. The Raiders had the most cap space in the entire NFL to work with but managed to let the team’s best defense player Lamarr Houston and best offensive player Jared Veldheer both walk away. Things only got weirder from there as the front office overpaid for offensive tackle Rodger Saffold to replace Veldheer, only to have Saffold fail his physical and ultimately sign elsewhere. Now, the Raiders still have a whole bunch of money to throw around while many of the big free agents have already found new homes.
3. Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars are a horrible team in terms of overall talent so just about anyone they sign is an upgrade. That being said, Jacksonville has basically spent the offseason overpaying for veteran players that were a part of successful teams last year. The Jaguars signed offensive lineman Zane Beadles from Denver and defensive end Red Bryant from Seattle, and while both players are solid, they aren’t franchise-changers. Meanwhile, both players will be past their prime long before Jacksonville gets the rest of its roster straightened out. The final dash of salt in the wound was shipping former first-round pick Blaine Gabbert out of town for only a sixth-round pick.
4. Dallas Cowboys
With next to no cap room to work with courtesy of Tony Romo’s contract, the Cowboys were destined to be losers in free agency. However, Dallas compounded the problem by cutting DeMarcus Ware in order to create a little space. Yes, Ware has been banged up the past couple of seasons, but he is still a devastating pass-rusher. Heck, the guy is probably a future Hall of Famer. The Cowboys had the worst defense in the NFL last year and letting go of their best defensive playmaker wasn’t the way to fix the issue.
5. New York Jets
Receiver Eric Decker isn’t going to fix their passing game, but that signing isn’t really the reason the Jets land on the list of free agency losers. New York has a lot of cap space to work with, but the team has come up empty on almost all of their top targets. Specifically, the Jets failed to land safety Jairus Byrd or corner Vontae Davis and were unable to work a deal for Darrelle Revis, watching him instead sign with division rival New England. Clearly, New York wanted to upgrade their secondary to support a strong front seven, but the Jets have failed miserably in their attempt. It’s tough to see this team making the playoffs at this point.
