2013 Super Bowl Predictions: Super Bowl XLVII Vegas Odds, Favorites and Sleepers – Patriots the Early Favorite: From 2004 to 2009, the AFC won five out of six Super Bowls, including a run of four straight. However, the NFC has turned the tables of late, winning the last three titles. Last year, the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots 21-17 to win their second championship in the last five seasons. Winning the Super Bowl has to be one of the hardest things to do in professional sports. Football is such a violent sport that injuries can’t help but be a part of the game. Depth is a must, and even for teams that don’t seem to have any major weaknesses, one bad game at the wrong time can end a season. With the 2012 NFL season a few weeks away, here is a look at the teams that have the pieces in place to win Super Bowl XLVII.
The Favorites – 2013 Super Bowl XLVII Odds and Predictions
Despite a defense that held opponents about as well as a wet paper towel and an offense that didn’t have a weapon to stretch the field, the New England Patriots still managed to compile the best record in the AFC (13-3) and reach the Super Bowl last season. Having Tom Brady under center certainly covers up a lot of holes, but the front office went out and addressed the weaknesses this team did have. Receiver Brandon Lloyd will be the deep threat this already unstoppable offense was lacking, and his presence should only make slot superstar Wes Welker and the two-headed tight end monster of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez that much harder to stop. On defense, rookie linebacker Dont’a Hightower was brought in to solidify one of the more athletic trios at the position, and fellow first-round pick Chandler Jones should bolster a weak pass rush. Add it up, and Brady and company should be making another run at a title.
After flirting with an undefeated season, the Green Bay Packers saw their hopes of back-to-back Super Bowl titles come to an end without winning a single playoff game. Although it was a disappointing end to a promising season, defending MVP Aaron Rodgers is back to lead a high-powered offense loaded with weapons like Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson. The Packers led the NFL in scoring last year, and considering Rodgers is coming off one of the most efficient seasons by a QB in league history and center Jeff Saturday was added to strengthen the offensive line, there is little chance they will slow down. Defensively, newcomers Nick Perry and Jerel Worthy should bolster a group that features play making veterans like Charles Woodson and Clay Matthews. This team probably isn’t done winning championships.
The Dark Horses – 2013 Super Bowl XLVII Odds and Predictions
They were Tim Tebowed out of the playoffs last season, but the Pittsburgh Steelers remain one of the most consistent franchises in the NFL. Pittsburgh’s defense was the stingiest in the game last year, and the unit might be even better this year with linebacker James Harrison, cornerback Ike Taylor and others healthy again. More importantly, the Steelers used the draft to reload the offensive line, which should mark a return of the power running game. A little more balance on offense will help quarterback Ben Roethlisberger make plenty of big plays down the field to a deep group of speedy receivers. The Steelers will be a factor once again.
In his first year as head coach, Jim Harbaugh nearly took the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl, ultimately falling one game short. Still, the 49ers probably have the best defense in the NFL, with stars like Patrick Willis, Justin Smith and Dashon Goldson leading the way. Receivers Randy Moss and Mario Manningham were brought in to add some big play weapons, but question marks remain on the offensive side of the ball. If running back Frank Gore can stay healthy and QB Alex Smith can build on his breakout year, this team can win the Super Bowl. San Francisco’s defense will take them back to the playoffs, but the offense is the X-factor.
I don’t want to disrespect the defending Super Bowl champs, but the New York Giants don’t play well enough in the regular season to be considered a favorite to repeat. After all, they were just 9-7 last year and were a loss to the Cowboys away from missing the postseason entirely. On the plus side, quarterback Eli Manning is as clutch as they come, and receivers Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks can both make big plays down the field. New York also had one of the nastiest defensive lines in the NFL and is always at or near the top of the league in sacks. It seems like everyone on the team plays better in the postseason, and as long as they make the playoffs, the Giants will be a factor.
The Sleepers – 2013 Super Bowl XLVII Odds and Predictions
No team faced more off-field drama this offseason than the New Orleans Saints. With all the suspensions resulting from the bounty scandals and the ensuing appeals, it is still unclear which players will be available and when. That being said, quarterback Drew Brees is back to power an incredible offense that led the NFL in passing and ranked sixth in rushing last year. Receiver Marques Colston, tight end Jimmy Graham and running back Darren Sproles are just a few of the weapons Brees has at his disposal. It is tough to predict how much of a distraction all the off-field issues will be when the season begins, but the Saints’ offense alone should ensure a return to the playoffs. The real test will be how New Orleans holds up in the big games without their coach and possibly without their defensive leader Jonathan Vilma.
If Lee Evans had held on to a pass in the end zone in the AFC title game, the Baltimore Ravens would have been in the Super Bowl. Instead, they saw another playoff run come to an end without winning a title. Running back Ray Rice is an elite player and the center of the offense, but quarterback Joe Flacco has been solid since his rookie season. Of course, Ray Lewis and the defense have been the real strength of this team for the past several seasons, and while the window is closing, the unit is still one of the best in the NFL. Baltimore wrestled away the AFC North from Pittsburgh last year, and as long as the veterans stay healthy, another division title and deep playoff run is possible.
