2013 Super Bowl XLVII MVP Odds and Predictions – Favorites, Dark Horses and Sleepers: While hoisting the Lombardi Trophy is the ultimate goal for any player that reaches the Super Bowl, there is nothing wrong with adding a little personal in the process. The Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award is the ultimate individual honor a player can earn during the NFL’s championship game, and not surprisingly, winning the game is essentially a must to be in consideration. Only once in the 46-year history of the Super Bowl has a player on the losing team been named MVP. Outside of playing for the winning team, playing on the offensive side of the ball is the easiest way to take home MVP honors. A total of 38 offensive players have been named MVP, including 25 quarterbacks. No other position has been given the MVP more than seven times. With those numbers in mind, here is a look at the top contenders for MVP honors for Super Bowl XLVII.
2013 Super Bowl XLVII MVP Odds and Predictions
The Favorites
If the Baltimore Ravens win Sunday, there is going to be a strong sentimental push to name Ray Lewis the MVP since the game will apparently be the last in the linebacker’s NFL career. He already earned the honor once in 2001, and regardless of what he actually does on the field, an argument can be made that his role as the team’s emotional leader has inspired Baltimore’s playoff run. Of course, Lewis is likely to play pretty well on the field, as well. He has amassed 44 tackles in three games this postseason and has helped the Ravens shut down Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. He is definitely the favorite to take home the award if the Ravens come out on top.
San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh apparently knew what he was doing when he made Colin Kaepernick the permanent starter at quarterback. In his first playoff game, he piled up 444 yards of offense and four scores while setting an NFL record for QBs with 181 rushing yards. In his follow up effort he helped the 49ers overcome a 17-0 deficit on the road to reach the Super Bowl. Kaepernick has a cannon for an arm and sneaky speed around the edge. Plain and simple, he is the single-most explosive offensive weapon in the matchup. If Kaepernick’s dual-threat ability is on full display Sunday, San Francisco will likely claim another championship will the young QB will join an elite list of Super Bowl MVP winners.
The Dark Horses
At the heart of the 49ers’ offensive attack is a power running game, and Frank Gore is the workhorse. He has lived up to his reputation thus far in the postseason, tallying averaging 104.5 yards per game on 4.8 yards per carry. Gore gas also found the end zone three times. If he tops 100 yards and scores a couple times Sunday, he could power San Francisco to a championship and earn himself MVP honors in the process.
It’s tough to argue with Joe Flacco’s resume this postseason. The Baltimore quarterback has thrown eight touchdowns and no interceptions while compiling a 114.7 QB rating. More importantly, he has helped lead the Ravens to the Super Bowl, outdueling Peyton Manning and Tom Brady on the road. Flacco is never going to pick defenses with a variety of throws, but he is becoming one of the best in the business at connecting on the deep ball. Another three-touchdown performance in a Baltimore victory would certainly put Flacco in the MVP conversation.
Sleeper Specials
Aside from his memorable game-tying touchdown against the Broncos, Baltimore receiver Jacoby Jones hasn’t done much this postseason. However, he is going to have plenty of chances to make plays Sunday because he also returns kicks and punts. Jones has blazing, and he can go the distance whenever he gets his hands on the ball. If Jones can score in the passing game and on special teams or at least have multiple explosive plays in both phases, he could become the surprise MVP winner.
No player has had more sacks in the first two years of their career than San Francisco’s Aldon Smith. The outside linebacker has a nasty combination go size, strength and speed, and he has knack for making game-changing plays in the backfield. If Smith terrorizes Baltimore QB Joe Flacco and disrupts the Ravens’ offense, he could join the small group of defensive players to earn Super Bowl MVP honors.
