2013 NFL Picks and Predictions: Regular Season Award Favorites: The 2013 NFL season has come to a close, and with the playoffs set to begin, it is time to take a look back at the top performers during the regular season. Specifically, it is time to predict which players will take home the top individual awards in the NFL. Some awards are fairly easy to predict while others have several viable candidates. With that in mind, here are my predictions for who will win the top regular season awards for the 2013 NFL season.
Most Valuable Player: Peyton Manning, Quarterback, Denver Broncos
At the end of the day, Manning’s numbers this season were far too incredible to consider anyone else for MVP honors. After all, he set new single-season records for both passing yards and passing touchdowns, and he was at the helm of an offense that set a new single-season record for total points. Throw in the fact that the Broncos finished with the best record in the NFL, and it is tough to make a legitimate argument for anybody else.
Defensive Player of the Year: Luke Kuechly, Inside Linebacker, Carolina Panthers
Sack artists Robert Mathis and Robert Quinn and shutdown corner Richard Sherman are all in the mix, but in the end, Kuechly will likely get the nod. His 156 tackles were the fourth most in the NFL, and he added 2.0 sacks and four interceptions. More importantly, Kuechly’s relentless motor in the middle of the Panthers’ defense has undoubtedly led to a culture change in Carolina. The year before he was drafted, the Panthers ranked 28-th in scoring defense. They improved to 18th in Kuechly’s rookie season, and this year, they allowed the second-fewest points in the NFL. Kuechly is now the focal point of one of the best defenses in the NFL, and the Panthers won the NFC South and earned a first-round bye with a 12-4 record. Add it all up, and he should have the edge in an otherwise tight race.
Offensive Rookie of the Year: Eddie Lacy, Running Back, Green Bay Packers
San Diego receiver Keenan Allen and Cincinnati running back Giovani Bernard are worthy of consideration, but Lacy came into his own after missing a couple of games in September with an injury. He finished the year eighth in the NFL with 1,178 rushing yards, and his 11 rushing scores were the third most in the league. In addition, he stepped up when quarterback Aaron Rodgers went down with an injury, scoring six of his 11 scores without Green Bay’s star QB under center. Lacy brought balance to the Packers’ offense, and he was a force around the goal line. He should land Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
Defensive Rookie of the Year: Kiko Alonso, Inside Linebacker, Buffalo Bills
Alonso should run away the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award. Not only did he lead all rookies in tackles, but his 159 stops were the third most in the entire NFL. He also logged 2.0 sacks and had four interceptions, proving he could be a playmaker as well as a reliable run-stopper in the middle of Buffalo’s defense. Plain and simple, he was just too productive not to snag this award.
Comeback Player of the Year: Terrell Suggs, Outside Linebacker, Baltimore Ravens
A bicep tear left cost him a chunk of last season and left him a shell of his usual self when he did get on the field. Back at full strength, Suggs had a big year for a Baltimore defense that was ravaged in free agency and left him as the main playmaker for the unit. Suggs finished the year with 10.0 sacks and tied a career-high with 80 tackles. Philip Rivers’ resurgence for San Diego was also impressive, but in the end, Suggs’ rebound from a major injury to be a high-end pass-rusher should land him Comeback Player of the Year honors.
Coach of the Year: Ron Rivera, Carolina Panthers
Andy Reid was the early favorite, but as his Kansas City Chiefs limped into the playoffs, Rivera’s Panthers won 11 of their final 12 games to snag the No. 2 seed in the NFC and a first-round bye. Rivera has slowly built Carolina into a defensive juggernaut, and after ranking 28th in scoring defense in 2011 and 18th last year, the Panthers allowed the second-fewest points in the NFL this year. Carolina isn’t flashy on offense, but they aren’t afraid to pound opponents on the ground. Rivera has instilled a hard-working mentality and helped the Panthers become a disciplined team that outmuscles its opponents. More importantly, he helped them become a 12-4 team this year. He should snag Coach of the Year honors.
