2012 NFL Predictions: Top 5 Team Offenses

2012 NFL Season Predictions – Top 5 Team Offenses in the NFL: High-powered offenses are becoming more and more prevalent in the NFL, and teams are passing the ball and scoring points at record rates. Last year alone, three teams averaged more than 32 points per game, and three averaged more than 400 yards per game. The bar has definitely been raised in recent years for what is considered a good offense, but while offensive numbers as a whole have exploded, there are a still a few teams that stand out. On that note, here is a look at the top offenses in the NFL for the upcoming season.

2012 NFL Predictions: Top 5 Team Offenses

1.      New England Patriots

Last year, the New England offense ranked third in the NFL in points per game, second in yards per game and second in passing yards. Those numbers are even more impressive when you consider that the Patriots didn’t have a single deep threat at receiver and were constantly under pressure to score because of one of the league’s worst defenses. With Tom Brady back under center, Wes Welker in the slot and two matchup nightmares at tight end in Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, this year’s unit has all its pieces back and then some. Receiver Brandon Lloyd will add a legitimate downfield threat to the mix, and a bunch of new parts on defense will allow Brady and company to play from ahead.

2.      New Orleans Saints

The Saints’ offense was the perfect blend of balance and explosiveness last season. New Orleans ranked second in the NFL in points per game (34.2) and averaged more offensive yards per game than any other team. With Drew Brees breaking Dan Marino’s single-season record for passing yards, it is not surprising that the Saints led the league in passing. However, they also rode a trio of backs and a strong offensive line to the sixth-best rushing attack, and they were the only team to convert more than 50 percent of their third down attempts. New Orleans has a ton of firepower, and Brees has ample weapons at his disposal. If not for the rather large discrepancy in points per game in domes compared to the outdoors, the Saints would be sitting in the top spot.

3.      Green Bay Packers

Led by MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the Packers led the NFL in scoring last year, averaging 35.0 points per game. Green Bay also ranked third in yards per game and third in passing, while posting the second-best third down conversion rate and committing the fewest penalties. Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson and Jermichael Finley are just some of the weapons the will be back this year, and Rodgers and company should once again be lighting up the scoreboard. The lone weakness for this unit is the running game, which didn’t even average 100 yards per game in 2011. The lack of balance hurt the Packers at times, especially in the playoff loss to the New York Giants. While very few teams can slow down Green Bay’s passing attack, the Packers need a counterpunch on the ground to handle the short list of teams that can.

4.      Philadelphia Eagles

For all the issues this team had last year, Philadelphia actually finished with solid offensive numbers. The Eagles ranked eighth in the NFL in points per game and fourth in yards per game. They also showed nice balance, ranking fifth in rushing and ninth in passing. Running back LeSean McCoy is an emerging star and is entering his prime, and Michael Vick is still a dynamic weapon under center. The offense should also benefit from having receiver Jeremy Maclin healthy and receiver DeSean Jackson happy. The Eagles are loaded with speedy, explosive weapons, and a year for the self-titled “Dream Team” to gel should do wonders.

5.      Houston Texans

Don’t let last year’s mediocre offensive numbers full you. The Houston Texans have plenty of talent on offense. Running back Arian Foster, quarterback Matt Schaub and receiver Andre Johnson give the Texans a trio of stars that are as good as any in the NFL, but in 2011, all missed significant time. In fact, Houston spent most of last season with a rookie, third-string QB running the offense and still won its division and had the second-best rushing attack in the league. A healthy Schaub under center should revive the passing game, and the added balance will make Foster and the ground attack that much better. Look for the Texans to post monster offensive numbers in 2012.
