2012 NFL Preseason All-Pro Selections: Offensive Players to Make All-Pro Team: While Pro Bowl selections are nice, it isn’t exactly an exclusive honor these days. In fact, most of the top players bow out of the Pro Bowl because they are either still in the playoffs or recovering from them or because they simply don’t want to play in what is essentially a touch football game. Being named to the All-Pro team, on the other hand, is a different story. Players that earn All-Pro selections are essentially being tabbed as the top player at their position in the entire NFL. Like I said, Pro Bowls are nice, but All-Pro selections are what build a Hall of Fame resume. With that in mind, here is a look my All-Pro offense for the upcoming NFL season.
2012 NFL Preseason All-Pro Selections: Offensive Players
Quarterback: Tom Brady, New England Patriots
The quarterback position is all about winning, and nobody does it better than Brady. The Patriots have won at least 10 games in each of the last nine seasons. Not to mention that no matter who he has around him on offense, he puts up MVP-caliber numbers, including topping 5,000 yards last year.
Running Back: Arian Foster, Houston Texans
It is scary to think that Foster missed several games last season and still rallied to finish fifth in the NFL in rushing. He is a big play waiting to happen, and he is equally as a receiver as he is as a rusher. With his hamstring issues behind him, he will likely lead the NFL in rushing and yards from scrimmage like he did in 2010.
Wide Receiver: Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions
Let’s be honest. If the pass was thrown at the proper height, Johnson could go up against all 11 players on the other team and come down with the ball. His combination of size, speed, strength and athleticism just isn’t fair. He led all receivers in yards and touchdowns last year and will probably do the same for the foreseeable future.
Wide Receiver: Larry Fitzgerald, Arizona Cardinals
Fitzgerald may actually have the best hands and the best technique of any receiver in the NFL. Arizona’s quarterback situation has been a joke in recent years, but that doesn’t stop him from putting up incredible numbers, including a 1,400-yard season in 2011.
Tight End: Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots
In his two years in the NFL, Gronkowski has been on the receiving end of 27 touchdowns, including an NFL record 17 for a tight end last year. He is too fast for linebackers to stick with him and too big for cornerbacks and safeties to bring him down in the open field. Gronkowski is a matchup nightmare.
Center: Nick Mangold, New York Jets
He is big, strong and surprisingly agile, and Mangold’s physicality makes him a dominant force in the middle of the Jets’ offensive line. He has four straight Pro Bowls and three straight All-Pro nominations under his belt.
Offensive Tackle: Joe Thomas, Cleveland Browns
You know you are pretty good left tackle when you have only one more holding penalty than Pro Bowl appearances. Thomas has been a pillar for the Browns, making the Pro Bowl in all five years of his career and making the All-Pro team in each of the last three seasons.
Offensive Tackle: Ryan Clady, Denver Broncos
Clady has been a force at left tackle since his rookie season when he started every game and allowed just half a sack. He anchored the offensive line for a Denver team that led the NFL in rushing last year, and he will help keep the newly acquired Peyton Manning safe and sound.
Offensive Guard: Jahri Evans, New Orleans Saints
He has made three straight Pro Bowls and three straight All-Pro teams, and he has never allowed more than two sacks in a season. Last year, Evans helped the Saints have the sixth-best rushing attack and allowed Drew Brees to be sacked just once in 657 attempts. His career is still in its infancy, but the Hall of Fame isn’t out of the question at his current pace.
Offensive Guard: Carl Nicks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Nicks had made the Pro Bowl and been an All-Pro selection in each of his two years as a starter in the NFL. He was major part of the offensive line that allowed the New Orleans Saints’ offense to shatter records last season. Nicks will be a welcomed addition to a Tampa Bay offense that struggled last season.
Kicker: Sebastian Janikowski, Oakland Raiders
He has the best leg in the NFL, and he has knocked in more than 80 percent of his attempts in four straight seasons. Last year, Janikowski connected on 31 of his 35 attempts, including hitting 7-of-10 from beyond 50 yards.
Special Teamer: Devin Hester, Chicago Bears
Despite opponents game-planning against him and the NFL making rule changes to limit kick returns, Hester still managed to score three touchdowns in the return game last year and lead the league in punt return average. For his career, Hester has 17 return touchdowns, including an NFL record 12 punt return scores.
