2012 NFL Team Predictions: Philadelphia Eagles Vegas Over/Under Odds, Schedule and Forecast: On paper, the Philadelphia Eagles looked like a frontrunner to win a championship heading into the 2011 season. Speedy playmakers lined both sides of the ball, and the players themselves were so confident that they self-titled their group the Dream Team. However, a nightmarish start to the season brought criticism and questions, and talk of a title quickly changed to talk of blowing up the team. Despite failing miserably to meet the high expectations, the Eagles did close the season on a four-game winning streak to finish 8-8. They still missed the playoffs, but heading into the 2012 with a little momentum for a franchise that is still loaded with talented players.
Despite all the problems that the Eagles experienced last year, their offense still ranked in the top 10 in scoring and fourth in yards per game. They have all the tools to be even better, but it starts with the health of quarterback Michael Vick. He has improved as a pocket passer, but his ability to make big plays outside of the pocket sets him apart from other players at his position. However, his constant scrambling has led to a multitude of injuries last season. At 100 percent, Vick has shown he can be almost unstoppable, but Philadelphia has assume he will be banged up or even out for at least a couple of games.
On the plus side, the Eagles have the weapons to win games even without Vick at full strength. Running back LeSean McCoy has emerged as one of the three best backs in the game, blending incredible speed and agility with muscle around the goal line. More importantly, receivers Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson should both be better in 2012. Maclin is fully healthy after missing time and playing hurt last year, and Jackson should go back to being a dominant deep threat now that he doesn’t have to focus on his contract issue. Throw in tight end Brent Celek, and Philadelphia doesn’t need Vick to make all the plays with his legs in order for the Eagles to score a lot of points.
Of course, scoring points wasn’t the biggest issue for the Eagles last season. A speedy defense was supposed to one of the best in the NFL, but a lack of size on the defensive front allowed opponents to control the line of scrimmage. Philadelphia’s speed on defense did allow the unit to lead the NFL with 50.0 sacks, but fixing the run defense was the top priority in the offseason. Linebacker DeMeco Ryans was signed at middle linebacker, and a first-round pick was used to add defensive tackle Fletcher Cox. The added size and strength in the middle of a defense that features two excellent pass rushers at defensive end and two strong corners in Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie could be the final piece to a championship-caliber unit.
When the Eagles closed last season on a four-game winning streak, we got a look at just how good this team could be. The defense allowed just 11.5 points per game during the streak, while the offense scored 31.3 points per game. On paper, Philadelphia looks even better than they did last season, but the team knows all too well from last year that championships aren’t won on paper. Still, the talent level on this team is undeniable. With size, speed and plenty of playmakers, the Eagles have all the weapons to make amends for last year’s failure. Look for Vick and company to win the NFC East and make a run at the title they never had a chance to pursue last season.
