2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Odds and Predictions – Top 5 Favorites

2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Odds and Predictions – Top 5 Favorites and Contenders to Win NFL AP Offensive Rookie of the Year: For the last two years, quarterbacks have been named the Offensive Rookie of the Year. In fact, Sam Bradford and Cam Newton have made it back-to-back No. 1 overall picks to take home the honor. That being said, the award has been somewhat wide open of late. Yes, QBs have had the upper hand, winning three of the last five Offensive Rookie of the Year Awards, but a wide receiver and a running back have also won during the stretch. With three different positions winning the award in the last five years, it is tough to say voters have shown any kind of bias. This year’s crop of rookies contains a nice mix, as well, and here is a look at how they stack up.

2012 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Odds and Predictions – Top 5 Favorites

1.      Robert Griffin III, Quarterback, Washington Redskins

The Heisman Trophy winner can stretch the field with his big arm and make plays outside of the pocket thanks to his speed and agility. He may need to refine his skills as a pocket passer, but being a dual-threat QB will definitely help the transition. The fact that Mike Shanahan likes to have his quarterbacks throw from outside the hash marks doesn’t hurt either. More importantly, RG3 steps into a decent situation with Roy Helu in the backfield and the speedy Santana Moss and Pierre Garcon at receiver. Throw in in Fred Davis at tight end, and Griffin has the weapons he needs to put up some solid stats in his rookie year.

2.      Trent Richardson, Running Back, Cleveland Browns

Going to a talent-depleted team like Cleveland has its drawbacks, but on the plus side, Richardson is the only weapon the Browns have on offense. He is going to be one of the few backs in the league that get a majority of the touches for his team, and his combination of power, speed and hands will allow him to pile up some solid statistics. Playing in the AFC North will take its toll, but a workhorse back like Richardson will hand out his fair share of the punishment, as well. Cleveland has a decent offensive line paving the way, and Richardson could easily be looking at around 1,000 rushing yards, 500 receiving yards and 10 scores. That is the type of all-around production that could win him some hardware.

3.      Andrew Luck, Quarterback, Indianapolis Colts

He is the most NFL-ready player in this draft, but Luck is walking into a rough situation in Indianapolis. Much like in Peyton Manning’s first year, the supporting cast for Luck isn’t exactly worth bragging about. His command and knowledge of a pro-style offense will allow him to have some memorable performances, but the Colts aren’t going to be winning a lot of games in 2012. Luck transformed a mediocre Stanford program into a perennial national title contender, but he is going to need some more talent around him to do the same in Indianapolis.

4.      Michael Floyd, Wide Receiver, Arizona Cardinals

Although the quarterback situation in Arizona isn’t ideal, playing across from Larry Fitzgerald should allow Floyd to have a solid rookie season. Floyd has an NFL body, and in his time at Notre Dame, he demonstrated the ability to beat defenders deep and catch balls in traffic in the middle of the field. His size and strength make him tough after the catch, and in many ways, he resembles former Cardinals’ receiver Anquan Boldin. Fitzgerald and Boldin had same incredible years playing together, and Floyd could produce similar numbers as the new No. 2 option in Arizona. He should challenge 1,000 yards as a rookie, and if he happens to find the end zone 10-plus times, Floyd could be a surprise contender for Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

5.      Justin Blackmon, Wide Receiver, Jacksonville Jaguars

After winning the back-to-back Biletnikoff Awards at Oklahoma State, Blackmon will take his skills to the next level this season. He can run any route in the book, and his long arms and leaping ability allow him to make spectacular grabs. There is little doubt that Blackmon is the most-explosive rookie at the receiver spot, and he should make plenty of big plays in 2012. However, playing for a Jacksonville team that has a ton of other holes on offense will make consistency tough to come. Quarterback Blaine Gabbert looked awful as a rookie last season, and unless he makes some serious strides, Blackmon’s numbers will suffer and so will his chances of winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.
