2012 NFL Predictions: MVP Odds, Favorites and Sleepers to Win the 2012 NFL MVP Award: Training camps are in full swing, and the 2012 NFL season is fast approaching. While every team is focused on reaching the playoffs and winning the Super Bowl, not every goal is team oriented. There are plenty of individual awards up for grabs, as well, and most-coveted honor is the Most Valuable Player Award. Quarterbacks and running backs have dominated the award, with QBs winning the last five. With that in mind, here is a look at how the contenders for this year’s NFL MVP Award stack up.
The Favorites – 2012 NFL MVP Award Odds and Predictions
It is going to be hard for defending MVP Aaron Rodgers to top his numbers from last season. He was by far the most-efficient passer in the league, throwing 45 touchdowns compared to just six interceptions and posting an NFL-best 122.5 quarterback rating. Rodgers will have weapons like Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson and Jermichael Finley back this season, and with his arm strength and accuracy, he should have no problem putting up monster numbers in Green Bay’s pass-happy offense. More importantly, Rodgers and the Packers should be plenty motivated this year after failing to win a single playoff game despite positing the best record in the NFL during the regular season.
Last year, Drew Brees led the NFL with 5,476 passing yards, 46 touchdowns and a 71.2 completion percentage. He also broke Dan Marino’s single-season record for passing yards. Brees’ inability to put up monster numbers when he wasn’t indoors hurt his MVP chances, but the Saints play plenty of games in dome stadiums, and the New Orleans pass-first offense is simply unstoppable when the elements are taken out of the equation. Brees is also the unquestioned leader of a franchise that is reeling from the bounty scandal. If he can guide the Saints to the playoffs amid all the off-field drama, the voters will take notice.
The Dark Horses – 2012 NFL MVP Award Odds and Predictions
If I had a vote for the NFL MVP, mine would have gone to Tom Brady last season. He threw for more 5,200 yards and 39 touchdowns, and did so with two tight ends and a tiny slot receiver as his weapons. Essentially, Brady did more with less than any player in the league, taking a New England team with no defense all the way to the Super Bowl. The Patriots added some firepower on the outside for Brady in the offseason, and 40-plus passing touchdowns and 5,000-plus yards could be on tap. The only downside is that Brady has become a victim of his own success. He is so good every year that the voters seem to just take his impressive numbers for granted.
He took home Rookie of the Year honors last year, and Cam Newton could end up winning a different trophy this season. He proved to be the bulldozer in the red zone that everyone expected, rushing for more than 700 yards and scoring 14 times on the ground. What people didn’t expect was for Newton to throw for more than 4,000 yards and 21 scores. Yes, he needs to cut down on his interceptions, but it appears that he is more than capable of being the same dynamic weapon that he was at Auburn. If Newton can carry the Carolina Panthers into playoff contention, he will be in the mix for the MVP Award.
Sleeper Specials – 2012 NFL MVP Award Odds and Predictions
There isn’t a more-versatile running back in the NFL right now than Arian Foster. He missed three games last year and played sparingly in a couple of others, and he still finished fifth in the league with more than 1,200 rushing yards. Foster also added 53 catches for more than 600 yards, and as long as he is healthy, he should easily lead the NFL in rushing yards and yards from scrimmage. He is the focal point of the Houston Texans’ offense, and his ability to produce big plays in the run game and the passing game will only help his chances. Foster is the one player that could end the five-year stranglehold that quarterbacks have had on the MVP Award.
After finally staying healthy for a full season, Matthew Stafford got a chance to show why the Detroit Lions made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 draft. He topped 5,000 yards passing and finished the year with 41 touchdowns. He also led a Detroit franchise known for its losing tradition back to the playoffs. Stafford definitely benefits from having an unstoppable receiver to throw to in Calvin Johnson, but his cannon arm has a lot to do with his success, as well. If he throws for 5,000-plus yards and 40-plus touchdowns again this year, the MVP voters will have to start paying attention to the Detroit quarterback.
Player to Avoid – 2012 NFL MVP Award Odds and Predictions
Unfortunately for Eli Manning, he just doesn’t put up numbers that catch the eye of MVP voters. He throws a lot of interceptions, he doesn’t complete a high percentage off his passes, and he isn’t a 40-plus touchdown type of quarterback. Heck, he was barely mentioned as a possible candidate last year when he threw for nearly 5,000 yards and carried a New York Giants team that couldn’t run the football at all to the playoffs and eventually to a Super Bowl title. Having two Super Bowl titles under his belt should help put the spotlight on him, but Manning seems to save his best for the postseason. Another Super Bowl MVP could be in his future, but a regular season MVP doesn’t seem likely.
