2013 NFL Mock Draft: Projected Draft Picks 6-10 for Browns, Cards, Bills, Jets and Titans: The lack of a dominant quarterback class and an excess of excellent prospects along both the offensive and defensive lines makes the 2013 NFL Draft one of the most unpredictable in recent, even at the top. The back half of the top 10 of this year’s draft is particularly interesting because there is a good chance that several teams will be looking to move their picks. In this latest mock draft, I have indicated the teams that are likely looking to make a deal on draft day, but for the time being, I based the picks on the current draft order.
6. Cleveland Browns, Tavon Austin, Wide Receiver, West Virginia
I expect Cleveland to be looking to move this pick to a team hoping to move up to grab a quarterback or an offensive linemen, but if they stay put, an explosive offensive weapon like Austin makes a lot of sense. After all, the Browns averaged less than 19 points per game last year and less than 215 passing yards. Meanwhile, they also los return specialist Josh Cribbs in the offseason. Austin can help in the passing game, the return game and even to some snaps in the backfield. For second-year quarterback Brandon Weeden, having a guy like Austin that can turn a short pass into a long touchdown will definitely help the growing process. Cleveland addressed the running game by adding Trent Richardson, and Austin’s blazing speed will give the Browns a playmaker in the passing game, as well.
7. Arizona Cardinals, D.J. Fluker, Offensive Tackle, Alabama
Like Cleveland, the Cardinals will be willing trading partners for any team looking to trade up and past Buffalo to grab a QB, but if they stay in the No. 7 spot, they have to take an offensive lineman even if it means reaching a bit. After all, Arizona is coming off a year when it allowed a league-high 58 sacks and ranked dead last in rushing yards and yards per carry. With Luke Joeckel, Eric Fisher and Lane Johnson all off the board, Fluker is the best offensive tackle available. His elite run blocking skills should help make a few holes for the newly-acquired Rashard Mendenhall, and while his pass blocking skills have room to improve, he is still an upgrade in protection for the also newly-acquired Carson Palmer.
8. Buffalo Bills, Geno Smith, Quarterback, West Virginia
Kevin Kolb was not signed to be the franchise QB that the front office in Buffalo has made it clear that they are going to try to find in this year’s draft. Meanwhile, new coach Doug Marrone’s apparent love of his former QB at Syracuse Ryan Nassib won’t outweigh the fact that Smith is the best prospect on the board at the position. I wouldn’t be surprised if teams tried to jump Buffalo to snatch Smith from them, but if things hold steady, the Bills won’t hesitate to nab Smith. He has performed well in all the drills on the field and all the interviews off it, and while the QB class in general is weaker than in recent years, Smith has established himself as the top guy.
9. New York Jets, Star Lutolelei, Nose Tackle, Utah
His heart issues appear to have been a fluke occurrence, and doctors have given Lutolelei a clean bill a health. As result, the bulldozing nose tackle is once again fair game for teams picking at the top of the draft, and he won’t get by the Jets. If Rex Ryan has any hope of rebuilding the defense that led New York to back-to-back AFC title games, it has to start by reestablishing control of the line of scrimmage. Lutolelei will not only command double teams, but he has the agility needed to make pressure the pocket and make plays in the backfield. His presence in the middle of New York’s defensive line will upgrade the team’s pass rush and rush defense at the same time. There’s nothing wrong with killing two birds with one stone.
10. Tennessee Titans, Chance Warmack, Offensive Guard, Alabama
With the offseason addition of Shonn Greene to a backfield already featuring Chris Johnson, the Titans are clearly looking to bring back the thunder and lightning days of 2008 when they tallied 24 rushing scores. Of course, the retirement of guard Steve Hutchinson makes that a little difficult, but fortunately, Warmack just happens to be the highest-rated prospect at the position since Hutchinson. Guards don’t normally go in the top 10, but Warmack’s skill set is exceptional and the position is one of Tennessee’s biggest needs.
