2011 Tennessee Titans NFL Expert Predictions, Picks, 2012 Vegas Super Bowl Odds and Schedule – Tennessee Titans NFL Football Season Preview: It was a train wreck in Tennessee in 2010-11, and the aftermath is still being felt. Superstar running back Chris Johnson is in the middle of a holdout. Wide receiver Randy Moss and quarterback Kerry Collins retired, and the team finally parted ways with disgruntled QB Vince Young. Deep threat Kenny Britt seems to get in trouble off the field as many times as he finds the end zone on it. Not to mention the fact that the Titans will have a new coach for the first time since 1994. The Jeff Fisher era that was marked by so many successes came to an ugly end, and Mike Munchack inherits a team that went 6-10 a year ago and features plenty of new faces in 2011-12.
Without question, the biggest story in Tennessee is whether or not Johnson and the front office will reach a new deal in time for the start of the season. The Titans are willing to make him the highest-paid running back in the NFL, but Johnson wants to be one of the highest-paid players. Considering he has more than 5,600 total yards from scrimmage and 38 scores in just three seasons, it’s tough to blame Johnson for not taking the field for his current $800,000 per year deal. Throw in the fact that the Titans were just 17th in scoring with him a year ago, and the front office can’t afford not to get a something worked out.
As for the rest of the offense, veteran Matt Hasselbeck was brought in to run the show while first-round draft pick Jake Locker develops and learns a pro-style system. In college, Locker did as much damage with his legs as he did his arm, running a majority of his sets from the shotgun formation. While his massive size and ability to scramble will still be useful at the NFL level, Locker needs to polish his craft while taking snaps from under center. In the meantime, Hasselbeck will be the good but not great QB he has been for the last several seasons. His main target in the passing game will be Britt, who recently got word that he won’t face a suspension for his off the field transgressions. Tight end Jared Cook has been given an expanded role in the offense as well, and given his massive size and speed, he could emerge as one of the league’s best.
Defensively, the Titans did a lot off adding and subtracting in an attempt to improve a unit that ranked 29th against the pass and 20th against the run. Tackling machine Barrett Ruud and second-round pick Akeem Ayers were brought in to revamp the front seven, and cornerback Justin Babineaux was added to help the secondary. On the downside, pass rushing specialist Jason Babin signed with the Eagles as a free agent. In the end, the run defense appears to have been addressed more than the secondary, and that decision is a little curious considering defending the pass was the Titan’s biggest weakness.
In an ideal world, Johnson and Tennessee will come to terms, and the centerpiece of the offense will be back in the mix. With Johnson’s explosive playmaking, the Titans are always one play away from reaching the end zone. If backup Javon Ringer is inserted instead, the starting offense suddenly becomes unspectacular. The defense is probably still going to be below average, and even with Johnson, the Titans were going to be hard pressed to make the playoffs. With a new coach and a QB that is just keeping the seat warm for the future franchise signal caller, the 2011-12 season is going to be a rebuilding year in Tennessee. The Titans will likely bring up the rear in the AFC South.
