The vegas experts have installed Atlanta Falcons rookie wide receiver Julio Jones the +500 favorite to win the 2011 NFL Offsensive Rookie of the Year Award followed by New Orleans Saints rookie running back Mark Ingram at +650 odds, Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Cam Newton at +650 odds and Cincinnati Bengals rookie wide receiver A.J. Green at +650 odds.
The NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award has been handed out 44 times, and 30 times, a running back walked away with top honors. Just five quarterbacks have walked away with award, but four of them have come in the last seven seasons, including last year’s winner Sam Bradford. Bradford also became the first No. 1 overall pick to win the award since 1981. History says a running back is the odds on favorite, but the past few seasons seem to point to a new trend emerging.
Top 5 2011 NFL AP Offsensive Rookie of the Year Contenders and Favorites
- Daniel Thomas, Running Back, Miami Dolphins
Miami traded up to draft Daniel Thomas because the front office knew Ronnie Brown was on his way out. As a result, Thomas will be the main ball carrier for a Dolphins’ team with an above average offensive line. Granted, Reggie Busch is in the picture, but he is more of a slot back, and he certainly isn’t going to see the between the tackles action that Thomas will. Not to mention the fact that Thomas will be a factor in the passing game as well. As one of the few rookies in a feature back role, Thomas should have the inside track on Rookie of the Year honors.
- A.J. Green, Wide Receiver, Cincinnati Bengals
The trade of Chad Johnson to the New England Patriots has opened the door for A.J. Green to make an immediate impact. He is Cincinnati’s biggest and most athletic receiver, making him the likely target for deep balls and red zone packages. Green has the size and speed combination in the mold of a Calvin Johnson, and while comparisons to “Megatron” are a bit premature, the potential is certainly there. Green is going to get plenty of targets as the main weapon on a bad Bengals team, and he should put up solid numbers even of his team struggles. He should be in the mix for top rookie honors.
- Julio Jones, Wide Receiver, Atlanta Falcons
Atlanta traded away a bunch of draft picks to move up to select Jones, and rest assured that the coaching staff will do everything in its power to justify the deal. His dedication was questioned at times in college, but his talent and blazing speed never were. Lining up opposite Roddy White will give Jones great matchups all season, and catching passes from Matt Ryan will help his numbers as well. Jones immediately becomes a big play weapon in an already potent Falcons’ offense, and his chances at being named Rookie of the Year will only be helped if Atlanta makes a playoff run as the team is expected to do this season.
- Ryan Williams, Running Back, Arizona Cardinals
Arizona made a big splash this offseason by trading for quarterback Kevin Kolb, but the addition of second-round pick Ryan Williams to the backfield could be equally impactful. He should immediately become the Cardinals’ third-down back as well as see a few touches in relief of Beanie Wells. Plus, Wells is one strong gust of wind away from being sidelined with an injury, which would thrust Williams into a full-time role. Even if Wells stays healthy, it probably won’t take long for the coaching staff to realize that Williams is a far more explosive back. Behind a rebuilt offensive line and with a new signal caller under center, Williams should do his share of damage on the ground and in the receiving game. He should have a shot at winning Rookie of the Year honors.
- Cam Newton, Quarterback, Carolina Panthers
The lockout hurt his chances to start immediately, but Cam Newton was the No. 1 overall pick, and the Panthers won’t wait long to put him on the field if the team struggles out of the gate. Since that will likely happen Newton should still see enough snaps to become a factor for Rookie of the Year honors. While his accuracy is very questionable, Carolina added pass-catching tight ends Jeremy Shockey and Greg Olsen in the offseason to give some underneath outlets. He will also get plenty of yards on the ground as he becomes part of a strong running game that already features DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. Ultimately, his chances at winning top honors will depend on when he gets his shot to take control of the offense.
