The NFC has been by far the tougher conference to predict during the past decade. In each of the last 10 seasons, a different team has represented the conference in the Super Bowl. Despite sending a different team every year, the NFC has had success, especially in recent years. The conference has won three of the last four Super Bowls, including two straight. Whether or not an 11th different team will win the NFC this season remains to be seen, but whichever team does emerge from the conference, they will be going for the NFC’s third straight championship.
Favorites – 2011 NFL NFC Odds, Picks and Predictions
Not only do the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers return almost their entire roster, they are actually adding weapons to an already loaded team. Tight end Jermichael Finley and running back Ryan Grant are both healthy again, and there returns should only make quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the offense more dangerous. Sack master Clay Matthews and cornerback Charles Woodson lead an underrated defense as well, and the Packers have more than enough talent to repeat as champs.
Powered by the seemingly unstoppable Michael Vick, the Philadelphia Eagles forced themselves to be looked at as favorites in the NFC after a flurry of offseason acquisitions. Ronnie Brown adds some power to the running ground, and cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie should help the Eagles contain the high-powered passing attacks that exist throughout the NFC. As long as Vick can stay healthy, the Eagles should be an explosive team on both sides of the ball.
Contenders – 2011 NFL NFC Futures, Favorites and Predictions
When it comes to balance and consistency on offense, no team is better equipped in the NFC than the Atlanta Falcons. Matt Ryan is a star quarterback in the making, running back Michael Turner is a touchdown machine, and wide receiver Roddy White is unstoppable in man-to-man coverage. Tight end Tony Gonzalez can still move the chains as well, and rookie Julio Jones adds an explosive element to the passing game. As long as the defense can hold its own, the Falcons will be a tough out come playoff time.
The Dallas Cowboys didn’t make a lot of moves in the offseason, but the return of quarterback Tony Romo is better than any free agent signing. Miles Austin, Dez Bryant and Jason Whitten give Romo plenty of options in the passing attack, and Felix Jones and rookie DeMarco Murray can handle things on the ground. DeMarcus Ware leads an aggressive front seven, but the secondary could be questionable. In the end, the Cowboys may have to outscore their opponents to win the NFC.
A stunning first round playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks ended the New Orleans Saints’ chance at winning back-to-back Super Bowls. That being said, quarterback Drew Brees is still one of the best in the business, and the team has plenty of talent on both sides of the ball. The addition of running back Mark Ingram should add some power to finesse pass-heavy offense, and the defensive unit was the fourth-best in terms of points allowed last season. Brees and the Saints choked last year, but the window is far from closed on this team.
Sleepers – 2011 NFL NFC Betting Odds, Free Picks and Predictions
Jay Cutler talks a big game, but the Chicago Bears may just have enough talent to back him up. Wide receiver Roy Williams was brought in during free agency to provide Cutler with a go-to option, and running back Marion Barber gives the Bears a physical presence on the ground for those cold Chicago games. The defense is always one of the best with linebacker Brian Urlacher patrolling the middle of the field and defensive end Julius Peppers pressuring opposing QBs. The Bears don’t have the overall talent of some other teams in the NFC, but they are one of those gritty teams that don’t go down without a fight.
Somebody has to win the NFC West, and thanks to the addition of quarterback Kevin Kolb, the Arizona Cardinals may be the team that does it. Kolb solidifies a position that has been a trouble spot for the Cardinals, and he and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald should immediately become a productive duo. In addition, the Cardinals bolstered the offensive line during free agency and added explosive running back Ryan Williams in the draft. Throw in an opportunistic defensive unit, and Arizona should emerge from its division. After that, anything can happen come playoff time.
