It is safe to say that the AFC has become a conference of dynasties. During the past eight seasons, only three different teams have represented the conference in the Super Bowl. In fact, the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts have all won NFL titles during the stretch, combing for five championships total. There have certainly been challengers over the years, but these three franchises have been models of consistency. Whether or not that will change in 2011-12 remains to be seen.
Favorites – 2011 NFL AFC Odds, Picks and Predictions
Coming off a 14-2 regular season but a surprising loss in their playoff opener, the New England Patriots will be out to avenge their embarrassing postseason loss to the Jets and make another run at a Super Bowl. Led by defending NFL MVP Tom Brady, the Patriots’ offense should be among the best in the league. Throw in Chad Johnson’s big play ability to the steady production of Wes Welker and the two-headed monster at tight end, and Brady and company could even better this year. The defense has gotten younger in recent years as well, and if Albert Haynesworth decides he wants to play football, the rest of the AFC needs to watch out.
The defending AFC champion Pittsburgh Steelers have found a formula for winning, and it has carried the franchise to three Super Bowl appearances since 2006. With quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and Mike Wallace keeping defenses honest with the deep ball, running back Rashard Mendenhall will lead a run-heavy attack once again in 2011-12. The true strength of the Steelers is a physical defense led by safety Troy Polamalu, and come playoff time, defense and a solid running game always seem to work out well for Pitssburgh.
Contenders – 2011 NFL AFC Futures, Favorites and Predictions
Although the AFC West is a mediocre conference at best, the San Diego Chargers have could make a run to the Super Bowl. Quarterback Philip Rivers is consistently underrated, and with a full season to throw to Vincent Jackson, the Chargers should have one of the best passing attacks in the NFL. San Diego probably doesn’t have the defense when all is said and done, but Norv Turner’s bunch should cruise into the playoffs, and anything can happen in a one-and-done format.
Last season, the New York Jets came within a game of reaching the Super Bowl. Not surprisingly, Rex Ryan is confident that his team can go all the way in 2011-12. Losing out on the Nnamdi Asomugha sweepstakes was a downer, but the New York defense is still one of the better units in the AFC. The bigger question marks are on the offensive side of the ball. Quarterback Jonathan Sanchez is far from the most polished passer in the NFL, and replacing Braylon Edwards with Plaxico Burress is probably a downgrade. That being said, the Jets win with swagger and defense as much as anything. Based on last year’s result, they can’t be overlooked.
The Indianapolis Colts have Peyton Manning leading their offense, and that fact alone makes the team a threat in the AFC. Dallas Clark, Austie Collie and multiple members of the offensive line are all back from injury this season, which should only help Manning’s numbers. The defense is questionable as always, but the Colts have one of the best signal callers in the game and always seem to make the playoffs
Sleepers – 2011 NFL AFC Betting Odds, Free Picks and Predictions
Ray Lewis and Ed Reed are getting older, but they still anchor a defense that is more than capable of taking the Baltimore Ravens back to the Super Bowl. Quarterback Joe Flacco has taken some heat for his playoff failures, and while it is true the Pittsburgh Steelers have owned him, Flacco has managed to win a road playoff game in each of his three years in the league. Another year to get familiar with wide receiver Anquan Boldin should any help Flacco’s performance, and having Ray Rice and newly acquired Ricky Williams to hand the ball to is a nice luxury as well. If Flacco can take the next step, the Baltimore defense can still get it done.
It was a spending frenzy for the Houston Texans this offseason, and the changes could lead to a playoff run and maybe more. The defense will be switching to a 3-4 base this year, a with sack master Mario Williams moving to outside linebacker and rookie J.J. Watt taking over at defensive end. In addition cornerback Jonathan Joseph and safety Danny Manning were brought in to help a terrible secondary. On offense, the Texans have arguably the best wide receiver in football in Andre Johnson, along with defending rushing champ Arian Foster. If the defense improves as expected, the explosive offense will do the rest.
