2011 New Orleans Saints NFL Expert Predictions, Picks, 2012 Vegas Super Bowl Odds and Schedule – New Orleans Saints NFL Football Season Preview: After winning the Super Bowl in 2009-10, the New Orleans Saints seemed to wear down in their attempt to defend their title. A few late season losses gave the NFC South to the Atlanta Falcons, and the slide continued with an opening round playoff loss the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks. Taking every team’s best shot through the course of 16 games took its toll, but New Orleans still has plenty of talent back on both sides of the ball. With a few offseason acquisitions to get a bit more physical in their own right, the Saints have their sights set on a trip back to the Super Bowl.
The heart and soul of the franchise the last few seasons has been quarterback Drew Brees. He has picked opposing defenses apart since coming to New Orleans, spreading the ball all over the field and routinely topping 4,000 yards. Brees has plenty of firepower as his disposal once again in 2011-12, and the aerial assault should be in full effect. Marques Colston is his top target, especially in the red zone because of his size. However, Lance Moore and Robert Meachem will see plenty of targets as well.
The emerging star for the offense could be tight end Jimmy Graham. He and Brees gelled at the end of last year, and with Jeremy Shockey no longer with the team, Graham will get a chance to show his stuff for an entire 16 games. After snagging five touchdowns in limited action, double digit scores is a real possibility. Another X-factor for the passing game could be newly acquired running back Darren Sproles. Sproles caught 59 passes last season for San Diego, and he could top that total in the pass-happy New Orleans offense. He doesn’t have the star power that Reggie Bush does, but Sproles could be just as effective for the Saints’ offense.
While the passing game is the bread and butter for the Saints, the addition for first round pick Mark Ingram could be the missing piece for the offense. The former Heisman Trophy winner gives New Orleans a true inside runner for the first time since Deuce McAllister. Ingram’s physical running style will help the Saints finish off drives in the red zone and run out the clock late in games. Not to mention the fact that taking some pressure of Brees will only make the entire offense more effective.
On defense, the Saints were a lot stingier than they were given credit for. New Orleans gave up the fourth-fewest yards per game last season and the eighth-fewest points. On the downside, the Saints’ secondary weren’t exactly opportunistic. With just nine interceptions, they were the only team in the NFL that failed to record double digit picks. In order to help the cause, the front office attempted to bolster the pass rush by drafting defensive end Cameron Jordan and signing defensive tackle Shaun Rogers.
Brees is a perennial MVP candidate, and his presence alone makes the Saints a playoff and Super Bowl contender. Throw in plenty of weapons on offense and an underrated defense, and the window is still wide open for New Orleans to add another championship or two in the coming years. The NFC South will likely come down to the Saints and Falcons once again, but Brees and company should have no trouble making it to the postseason, even if they don’t win the division. Make no mistake. This team can win a championship this year.
