2011 Miami Dolphins NFL Expert Predictions, Picks, 2012 Vegas Super Bowl Odds and Schedule – Miami Dolphins NFL Football Season Preview: Switching between a traditional pro-style offense and the wildcat formation, the Miami Dolphins struggled to find consistency on offense last season. However, an underrated defense kept the team in a lot of games. In fact, until a three-game skid to end the year, the Dolphins had a chance to sneak into the playoffs. They ultimately finished at 7-9, but with some offseason moves to bring some consistency to the offense, the record could improve in 2011-12.
The biggest difference between this year’s team and last year’s team will be the starting backfield. Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are both gone, and Reggie Bush and second-round pick Daniel Thomas have been brought in as replacements. Early indications are that Busch will be the starter, seeing significant opportunities in both the running and passing game. Meanwhile, Thomas will serve as the physical force and goal line back, taking advantage of his massive frame. Regardless of who is getting the carries, they will have the benefit of a loaded offensive line that only got better this offseason with the addition of first-round pick Mike Pouncey.
Busch and Williams signal a shift to a traditional offense, which means quarterback Chad Henne will have to perform better than he did a year ago when he had just 15 touchdowns. Stability in the play calling should help, and he does have two quality targets to throw to. After all, Brandon Marshall is a borderline elite option at the receiver position, and he topped 1,000 yards last year despite having one of his worst years. Meanwhile, slot receiver Devon Bess is one of the best kept secrets in the NFL, and he and Marshall combined for 165 catches and nearly 1,900 yards last season. There is no reason that the Dolphins offense shouldn’t be more effective in the upcoming year.
While the offense will be looking to up its production, the defense just needs to stay the course. Last year’ unit ranked in the top 10 in both passing and rushing yardage allowed. Cameron Wake figures to lead a potent pass rush after tallying 14 of Miami’s 39 sacks last year. The sudden retirement of Channing Crowder wasn’t great news for the linebacking core, but the front office wasted little time grabbing San Diego’s leading tackler Kevin Burnett as a replacement. Aside from forcing a few more turnovers, there really isn’t anything this unit needs to improve on, and given the personnel returning, Miami Should have no problem putting up solid numbers across the board once again.
Avoiding another late season collapse is probably going to be the key to a successful season for Miami. After all, Bush has never been able to shoulder the load as a starting running back, and Thomas has never played a 16-game NFL season. Henne can help the cause by improving his own play, and having a focused Marshall should help in that area. Even with an improved offense and an above average defense, the Dolphins still face the unenviable task of playing in the AFC East. New York and New England are both better teams, which leaves Miami stuck in third place. The Dolphins can likely finish at or slightly above the .500 mark, but the playoffs will probably be out of reach.
