2011 Indianapolis Colts NFL Expert Predictions, Picks, 2012 Vegas Super Bowl Odds and Schedule – Indianapolis Colts NFL Football Season Preview: Although Peyton Manning had one of his worst statistical seasons last year, it may have been his finest performance from a leadership standpoint. Playing with an injured receiving core, zero running game and battered offensive line, Manning threw 17 interceptions. Still, he found a way to lead the Colts to a 10-6 record and another AFC South title. An offseason has allowed Manning’s weapons to get healthy, but now the signal caller finds himself dealing with a neck issue. Ultimately, the health of the future Hall of Fame QB will be the key to the Colts making another run at the Super Bowl in 2011-12.
The good news for Indianapolis is that Manning is back practicing with the team after offseason neck surgery kept him sidelined for all of training camp and the start of the preseason. Considering he has never missed a start in his NFL career, Manning will have to be all but incapacitated to not take the field when the season begins. That being said, Manning may or may not be 100 percent healthy even if he is on the field. At the very least, he may need a few games to shake off the rust. Once he does, the always reliable Reggie Wayne is waiting, along with emerging stars Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie. Manning’s favorite red zone target Dallas Clark will return this season as well after missing most of last season with an injury.
In an attempt to ensure that Manning won’t be needing any more surgeries any time soon, the front office spent the Colts’ first two draft picks on offensive tackle Anthony Castonzo and guard Ben Ijalana. Bolstering the line should also help an anemic rushing attack that ranked 29th in the NFL last season. Rookie running back Delone Carter adds some depth behind Joseph Addai as well, and while the Colts are never going to lead the league in rushing yards, this year’s ground attack should provide a little more balance to a passing attack that was the most productive in the NFL last season.
The offensive line wasn’t the only issue addressed by Indianapolis in the offseason. Several free agent additions were brought in to improve a suspect defense that ranked 23rd in terms of points allowed and 25th against the run. Former first round picks Ernie Sims, Tommie Harris and Jamaal Anderson should bolster the defensive front. Harris in particular could have a huge year playing in the middle of a front four that features pass rushing specialists Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis. The Colts will need to put some heat on opposing quarterbacks this year to compensate for a secondary that lost oft-injured safety Bob Sanders and cornerback Kelvin Hayden. Despite these losses, the defense as a whole appears to have been upgraded.
At the end of the day, the Colts live and die with Manning. Even if he isn’t 100 percent, he is better than most of the QBs in the NFL, especially with his full arsenal of weapons at his disposal and a stronger offensive line. Manning has already shown he can take the Colts to the playoffs more or less by himself, but this is a team that is focused on Super Bowls. Manning will lead Indianapolis to another division crown, but a championship run is going to depend on whether or not the changes on the defensive side of the ball pay off.
