2011 Cincinnati Bengals NFL Expert Predictions, Picks, 2012 Vegas Super Bowl Odds and Schedule – Cincinnati Bengals NFL Football Season Preview: After a few glimmers of hope in recent years, the Cincinnati Bengals have once again entrenched themselves as one of the worst franchises in the NFL. Owner Mike Brown has done his best to make the team as much of a mess off the field as it is on it. From making jail time a requirement for all free agent acquisitions to destroying team chemistry with the addition of Terrell Owens, it is tough to blame quarterback Carson Palmer for opting to retire rather than continue to be a part of the mess. With Palmer likely out of the picture in 2011-12, what little identity the Bengals had is gone. It is now officially time to rebuild in Cincinnati, and it could be a long year for a very young team.
Palmer wasn’t the only big name to depart this offseason. Vocal receiver Chad Ochocinco left via a trade to the New England Patriots. Considering Cincinnati got a fifth-round pick in return and could have gotten multiple first-round picks from Washington a few years earlier for Ochocinco, it is safe to say the front office missed the boat on this one. The lone bright spot is the Ochocinco’s departure eliminates the biggest ego on the team and opens the door for first-round pick A.J. Green to play immediately. Green has a rare combination of size, speed and hands, and he has been tabbed as the next Calvin Johnson in terms of playmaking ability.
Green won’t be the only rookie in the starting lineup when the season begins. Second-round pick Andy Dalton will be under center for Cincinnati. Dalton was known for his accuracy and ability to distribute the ball in college. However, he doesn’t have the strongest arm. Throwing him to the wolves as a rookie will certainly test his ability to read defenses and his poise in the pocket. There will likely be several bumps in the road, and Dalton will need to be as strong mentally as he is physically in order to deal with the learning curve.
Having Green at receiver should help as will several other young offensive weapons. Jordan Shipley looked like a solid slot receiver in his rookie season, and even Jerome Simpson started to show flashes of the potential that made him a second-round pick three years ago. Throw in promising tight end Jermaine Gresham, and Dalton and his receivers will have the chance to grow into something special together. In the meantime, running back Cedric Benson will be the focal point of the offensive attack. However, a suspect offensive line could hinder both Benson and Dalton’s production this season. If former first-round selection Andre Smith could ever live up to his potential, it would be a step in the right direction.
Defensively, the Bengals got older in the secondary as Johnathan Joseph left in free agency and Nate Clements was brought in. Cincinnati did resign cornerback Leon Hall, but losing Joseph breaks up a nice duo that had been hiding the inefficiencies of the Bengals’ pass rush. In an attempt to get more big plays from the unit, Ray Maualuga has been moved to middle linebacker to get him involved in more plays. Manny Lawson was brought in as well to add a linebacker with a history of pressuring quarterbacks. The Bengals best athletes on defense are their linebackers, and they will have to produce if this unit is going to be any kind of a force.
While the cupboard isn’t as bare as some people think, the 2011-12 season has the potential to be a failure of epic proportions for Cincinnati. There are simply too many young players at too many important positions, and an offensive line that has traditionally underperformed is only going to exacerbate the issues. Factor in a mediocre defense, the Bengals seemed destined to bring up the rear in the AFC North.
