2011 Chicago Bears NFL Odds and Predictions – Bears Super Bowl Odds and NFC Championship Futures

2011 Chicago Bears NFL Expert Predictions, Picks, 2012 Vegas Super Bowl Odds and Schedule – Chicago Bears NFL Football Season Preview: After a 7-9 season in 2009-10, there weren’t many experts that predicted the Chicago Bears would make it all the way to the NFC Championship last season. It is funny how a little bit of success can change the way a franchise is viewed, and after being the underdogs during last year’s playoff run, the Bears suddenly face high expectations this season. Already facing criticism for leaving the final playoff game with an injury, quarterback Jay Cutler will shoulder much of the burden in 2011-12, especially if Chicago doesn’t contend.

Offensive coordinator Mike Martz was supposed to transform the Chicago offense into a high-powered scoring machine. However, the Bears ranked 21st in scoring last season and 28th in passing. Cutler’s bad decisions played a factor, and he now has 50 touchdowns and 42 interceptions in two seasons in Chicago. Of course, a weak group of receivers and a porous offensive line didn’t exactly help the cause either, and the front office tried to address both areas in the offseason.

The Bears drafted offensive tackle Gabe Carimi in the first round and brought in receiver Roy Williams in free agency. If Carimi’s career at Wisconsin was any indication, he should have an immediate impact for Bears. Williams could be another story. Despite enjoying the best season of his career when teamed with Martz in 2006, Williams’ career has been highlighted by dropped passes and underperforming. Unless he returns to form, the Bears could struggle once again to move the ball through the air with the undersized Johnny Knox and converted kick returner Devin Hester as the primary targets. The good news is that versatile running back Matt Forte is back after rushing for more than 1,000 yards last season and adding more than 500 yards in the passing game.

While Martz and the offense get a lot of the attention, the bread and butter of Bears has always been the defense. Linebacker Brian Urlacher still leads the unit that ranked second against the run last season and fourth in scoring. Defensive end Julius Peppers can still rush the passer with the best of them, and former top-10 pick Amobi Akoye was brought in to replace the injury plagued Tommie Harris at defensive tackle. The secondary did lose safety Danieal Manning, but Charles Tillman still has a few years left of quality football. Not to mention that Chris Harris and Tim Jennings were brought in during free agency to add some depth at cornerback. As was the case last year, the secondary will be adequate while the front seven will be absolutely nasty.

Overall, not much has changed for the Bears from last season. While theoretically that does mean a return trip to the NFC Championship is possible, the odds certainly aren’t great if the offense doesn’t improve, and the odds aren’t great that Williams will give consistent effort. Carimi is a step in the right direction for the offensive line, but one player, especially a rookie, won’t suddenly solve all the issues. Urlacher and company will once again field one of the stoutest defenses in the NFL, which should be enough to but the Bears in position to make the playoffs. However, Chicago would have to overachieve to knock off Green Bay in the NFC North and make a Super Bowl run.
