When the AFC South was created in 2002, the Indianapolis Colts figured to be one of the better teams in the division. Almost a decade later, little has changed. The Colts have claimed seven of the nine division titles, including the last two. In fact, only Indianapolis and Tennessee have ever won the division since its creation. Whether or not the Colts can complete a three-peat and win the division for the eighth time in 10 years remains to be seen. Let’s get to the rankings.
2011 NFL AFC South Divisions Odds, Expert Picks, Predictions and Preview:
- Indianapolis Colts
A lot has been made about Peyton Manning’s 17 interceptions last season, but in reality, not enough is being made about how Manning led an injury depleted Colts team to another division title. This year, Manning will have his full arsenal of receivers, running backs, offensive linemen back in the mix, along with safety valve tight end Dallas Clark. The defense is always a question mark, but Manning should have no problem leading a healthy Indianapolis team to another AFC South title and back to the playoffs.
- Houston Texans
The Houston offense is absolutely loaded. Andre Johnson may be the best receiver in the league, Matt Schaub can throw for 300 yards at will, and Arian Foster led the league in rushing last season. The problem for the Texans has never been scoring points, but stopping opponents has been a major issue. However, offseason moves brought in cornerback Jonathan Joseph and safety Daniel Manning to bolster a porous secondary. Rookie defensive end J.J. Watt joins the mix as well to help the team switch to a 3-4 base and free up Mario Williams to become a blitzing linebacker. The Texans probably aren’t ready to knock off the Colts, but they could grab a wildcard spot this season.
- Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars are a team in transition, and drafting quarterback Blaine Gabbert was a clear sign that the times are changing. David Garrard will likely see most of the starts this season, but Gabbert is being groomed for the job. In the meantime, Maurice Jones-Drew and his rebuilt knee will be the center of the offense once again, while a suspect group of receivers make stretching the field difficult. The defense is solid, but it is not good enough to make up for Jacksonville’s inefficiencies on offense. The Jaguars will be average at best on 2011.
- Tennessee Titans
The good news is that the Titans have one of the most electrifying players in the NFL in running back Chris Johnson. The bad news is that they don’t have much else, and wide receiver Kenny Britt finds trouble off the field as often as he finds the end zone. Veteran Matt Hasselbeck has been brought in to run the offense while rookie Jake Locker gets comfortable at the NFL level, but the Titans simply don’t have enough talent to make any noise in the AFC South this year.
