2020 NBA Championship Betting Odds – Value Bets to win the Championship: Now that the All-Star break is in the books, it is time for the home stretch of the 2019-20 NBA regular season. There are still a few playoff spots up for grabs, but while a lot of teams will simply take up spots in the postseason, a few actually have a shot at winning the championship.
Three teams have separated themselves from the pack as far as championship favorites go. In the Eastern Conference, the Milwaukee Bucks are running away with the top seed and are the runaway favorites to reach the NBA Finals. Out West, the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers look the clear frontrunners.
While the smart money is one of these three times winning it all, nothing is set in stone in the NBA. Injuries can happen and upsets can occur. If you are looking to try to find a little more value with your championship future bets, here are my favorite alternatives to the betting favorites.
2020 NBA Championship Betting Odds: Value Bets to win the Championship
Value Bets
Houston Rockets (+1400)
Houston is mired in the middle of the Western Conference playoff picture, and like any Mike D’Antoni-coached squad, the Rockets score a ton, shoot a bunch of 3-pointers and play below average defense. Led by the NBA’s leading scorer, James Harden, Houston ranks second in the NBA in points per game (118.2) and leads the league in both 3-pointers made and attempts per game. It is easy to assume that this year’s Rockets will meet the same playoff fate as they have every other year under D’Antoni, but this version has a couple of X-factors.
For one, Russell Westbrook gives Houston another go-to scoring option for when Harden is struggling, and Westbrook can get to the rim when the 3-ball isn’t falling. The Rockets also went all in on a small-ball lineup, trading away center Clint Capela and committing to a starting five of small forwards and guards. No team has ever fully committed to this strategy, and it could prove to be a curveball for opponents. The Western Conference likely goes through Los Angeles, but if someone is going to crash the party, a 3-point happy squad led by two former MVPs seems like a decent choice, especially at +1400.
Philadelphia 76ers (+1600)
The flaws are obvious. Philadelphia’s two best players, Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid, are a terrible fit on the court, veteran Al Horford is playing hurt, and the firepower from beyond the arc is lacking. Throw in an atrocious road record, and it is easy to see why the 76ers have fallen into the middle of the Eastern Conference playoff picture.
All that being said, this is still a team with as much talent as any in the NBA, and they are nasty on the defensive end. They are also 25-2 at home. As disappointing as the 76ers have been, both Simmons and Embiid are capable of taking over a game and carrying Philadelphia to a win on any given night. They don’t necessarily have to figure things out for an entire series. If they can steal just one road game here and there, their dominance at home could take care of the rest. You are getting a lot of talent at +1600.
Boston Celtics (+1800)
My favorite value bet on the board right now has to be the Celtics. They are tied for second in the NBA in scoring defense, and they rank third with a point differential of +6.9. Boston is also 10th in scoring offense and third in the Eastern Conference, and no Easter Conference team has more wins against opponents with winning records. The Celtics have a trio of long, versatile wing players in Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Gordon Hayward, a go-to scorer in Kemba Walker and a defensive stopper in Marcus Smart. Boston is in good position to land the No. 3 seed, and I think they have the overall depth to compete against any team in the NBA.
Toronto Raptors (+2000)
Even without Kawhi Leonard, the defending champs have been surging of late. The Raptors are currently the No. 2 seed in the East, and they rank fourth in the conference in both scoring offense and scoring defense. Toronto also ranks fourth in scoring margin in the entire NBA. It remains to be seen if they can close out postseason games without Leonard in the mix, but the Raptors have the athleticism, length and chemistry to at least be a tough out and potentially make a surprise run. At +2000, I don’t see a team getting longer odds that has a realistic chance of making a title run.
