2013 NBA Draft Recap: Top 5 Undrafted Players Most Likely to Be Signed

2013-NBA-Draft-Picks-and-Projections2013 NBA Draft Recap: Top 5 Undrafted Players Most Likely to Be Signed: Although the 2013 NBA Draft has come and gone, all hope is not lost for the players that didn’t hear their names called on draft night. For one, teams know that with the draft only consisting of two rounds that plenty of quality players won’t get selected. More importantly, there are plenty of teams that still have openings on their rosters to fill, and several of these undrafted players will end up on NBA rosters by impressing coaches and general managers during private workouts. Heck, players like Avery Johnson, John Starks and Ben Wallace are all guys that went undrafted but went on to have productive careers. With that in mind, here is a list of the best undrafted players from the 2013 NBA Draft.

NBA Basketball

1.      C.J. Leslie, Power Forward, North Carolina State Wolfpack

Leslie has nobody to blame but himself for not being drafted. His lack of focus and intensity was evident throughout his college career. That being said, he is still an athletic big man with a versatile offensive skill set, and when he turns up his motor he can dominate on the offensive end as evidenced by his 25-point effort in the Wolfpack’s upset of top-ranked Duke last year. Leslie can score with his back to the basket or get to the rim when facing up slower defenders, and he also has a soft touch from 10-12 feet away from the hoop. Any team that needs a little offensive punch in their frontcourt will give Leslie a shot.

2.      Myck Kabongo, Point Guard, Texas Longhorns

Trouble with the NCAA left Kabongo on the sidelines most of his freshman season, and the decision to go pro without having had a chance to show his stuff at the collegiate level backfired. Fortunately for Kabongo, his reputation as a fairly-heralded prospect will get him plenty of looks. When he was on the court, he averaged 14.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.0 steals so his versatility is clear. Kabongo definitely needs to improve his jump shot, but he is fast and aggressive, which allows him to penetrate and get to the rim. He is a bit of a project, but Kabongo has more than enough athleticism to play at the next level, and at the very least, he should be able to make a serviceable floor general for some team’s second unit.

3.      Jackie Carmichael, Power Forward, Illinois State Redbirds

It’s safe to assume that playing at Illinois State kept Carmichael off the radar and on the outside looking in on draft night. However, the athleticism and energy of the 6’9” power forward should find him a home on an NBA roster before next season begins. Last year alone, he averaged 17.4 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.1 blocks, and he was an efficient scorer and solid shot blocker and rebounder throughout his four years at Illinois State. Carmichael isn’t going to be afraid to do the dirty work at the next level, and while he might be best suited as a spark off the bench, he also enough game to start in the right situation.

4.      Michael Snaer, Shooting Guard, Florida State Seminoles

He was often asked to shoulder a lot of the offensive load for a Florida State team that didn’t have a lot of firepower, and in the end, doing what the Seminoles needed him to do probably masked what his best attributes actually are. Snaer is a physical, disciplined perimeter defender, and he is the type of player that will be happy to spend a whole game glued to an opponent’s best shooter. His offensive game isn’t overly polished, but he did take and make multiple game-winning shots for FSU last season. Snaer is a fearless, hard-working guard, and he will be a major asset for any team looking to upgrade its perimeter defense.

5.      Phil Pressey, Point Guard, Missouri Tigers

Pressey wasn’t just a good point guard for the Tigers. He was a great one. However, a lack of size and a bad habit of falling in love with his own, inconsistent shot kept him from getting his name called during the NBA Draft. Still, Pressey is lightning quick and an excellent passer, and he will be able to penetrate and find shooters at the next level. He is never going to be a star, but a player like Pressey can be a useful backup point guard for a long time as long as he is willing to stick to being strictly a distributor.
