2011-2012 NBA Scoring Title Odds and Props – Favorites, Contenders and Sleepers to Win the NBA Scoring Title: Basketball is a team game, but one of the most-coveted honors in the NBA is the scoring title. The award is synonymous with the elite players in league history. Michael Jordan won a record 10 scoring titles, and Wilt Chamberlain ranks second with seven scoring titles. In recent years, Allen Iverson, Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant have all won the award multiple times. It is safe to say that one of the quickest ways to become a star in the league is to win a scoring title.
2012 NBA Scoring Title Favorites and Contenders
- Kevin Durant, Forward, Oklahoma City Thunder
Not only is Durant the youngest player to ever claim a scoring title, he has earned the honor in each of the past two seasons. Granted, he still has a long way to go to match Jordan and Chamberlain’s record of seven consecutive scoring titles, but he is certainly capable of a three-peat. Durant has range well past the 3-point line, and with his 6-10 frame and wingspan that reaches well over seven feet, he is nearly impossible to guard on the perimeter. He continues to expand his post game, and he gets to the foul line nearly 10 times a game and converts 90 percent of the time. As the top option for a rising Thunder team, Durant will likely be around 30 points per game for the next several seasons.
- Carmelo Anthony, Forward, New York Knicks
After finishing third in the NBA in scoring last year, Anthony could be primed for a breakout performance in 2011-12. A full year in the fast-paced offensive system of Mike D’Antoni could easily propel Anthony to a scoring title thanks to more easy scores in transition and more 3-point attempts. Not to mention the fact that he has turned himself into an 80-plus percent shooter from the foul line. It was clear last season that Anthony was the primary option, even with Amar’e Stoudemire also on the roster. As long as Anthony remembers to use his post game, there is no reason he can’t win the scoring title this season.
- LeBron James, Forward, Miami Heat
James finished second in the league in scoring in his first year with the Miami Heat. His freakish combination of size, speed and leaping ability make him nearly impossible to guard, especially in the open court. James shot an impressive 51 percent from the field last year and continues to improve his percentage from the foul line. James shoots around nine foul shots a game, and it will make a huge difference if he can push his average from 75 percent closer to 80. He supposedly worked on his back to the basket game this offseason, which should solve some of the issues he had scoring in half court sets. James is arguably the most athletically gifted player in the NBA, and he is going to be in the mix for scoring titles for the foreseeable future.
- Dwyane Wade, Shooting Guard, Miami Heat
Playing alongside LeBron James and Chris Bosh didn’t slow down Wade last season. He finished fourth in the league in scoring, while connecting on 50.0 percent of his shot attempts. Like his fellow superstar teammate, Wade needs to bump up his free throw percentage. He also needs to improve his shooting from 3-point range. That being said, Wade has an excellent mid-range game and can get to the rim as well as any guard in the league. His knack for playing the passing lanes leads to a lot of steals and transition baskets as well, and those easy points add up over the course of the year. Wade’s biggest hurdle is probably his teammate James, who he has been more than willing to defer to until crunch time.
- Kobe Bryant, Shooting Guard, Los Angeles Lakers
Naysayers will call Bryant too old to add another scoring title to his collection of awards, but last year’s numbers had him in the conversation. For starters, he took the court in all 82 games and still plays more than 30 minutes a night. He had the fifth-best scoring average in the NBA, and he ranked second in shot attempts per game. Bryant consistently hits more than 80 percent of his free throws and average about eight attempts a night. Rumors are swirling about Los Angeles looking to trade for some big name players like Dwight Howard or Chris Paul, and the addition of either player should only help Bryant. He isn’t the frontrunner for the scoring title, but writing him off is a major mistake.
