2020 Auto Club 400 Predictions – Value Bets and Sleepers for the Auto Club 400: The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Fontana, California, this weekend for its annual visit to Auto Club Speedway and Race No. 2 of the West Coast swing. Along with Michigan International Speedway, Auto Club is one of two tracks on the schedule to feature a two-mile layout, and while the track’s wide surface provides drivers with plenty of room to work, clean air can also be crucial thanks to abrasive surface that chews up tires.
Big names have enjoyed plenty of success at Auto Club over years, and Kyle Busch dominated this race just last year. However, the two-mile tracks are their own animal to a degree, and there are a few top-10 drivers who become legitimate threats to win at Auto Club and Michigan. There are also a few organizations that seem to elevate their performance at these two-mile tracks.
Unlike last weekend at Las Vegas when I didn’t love any of the longshot bets, there are actually a few dark horses that I have my eye on for Sunday’s Auto Club 400, including a couple of serious longshots. This could be a good weekend to roll the dice a bit and try for a big payday.
2020 Auto Club 400 Predictions: Value Bets and Sleepers for the Auto Club 400
Value Bets
Ryan Blaney (16/1)
His Team Penske teammates are both listed among the favorites this weekend, but Blaney has been solid at the two-mile tracks in his own right. He has cracked the top 10 in five of his six starts with Team Penske, finishing eight and fifth in two starts at Auto Club. Betting on Blaney gives you a little more room for profit while still providing exposure to one of the dominant organizations at Auto Club.
William Byron (20/1)
These odds might not seem long enough for a driver who has never won a Cup race, but Byron made a major statement at Las Vegas last weekend, recording the second-most fastest laps. He’s also been solid at the two-mile ovals. Byron has four top-15s in six starts, and he has cracked the top 15 in both of his starts at Auto Club. After closing 2019 on a high note and looking like a threat to win already in 2020, it seems like a matter of when and not if he will be celebrating in victory lane.
Kurt Busch (40/1)
Busch might not be a weekly top-five driver, but he’s usually good for at least one win a year, and he’s been stout at the two-mile ovals throughout his career. In addition to owning a combined four wins at Auto Club and Michigan, he has eight top-15s in the last 10 races at these tracks, finishing sixth or better in four of the last five. You will have a tough time finding a driver with a better resume getting longer odds to win this weekend.
Matt DiBenedetto (80/1)
Betting on a driver who has never won a Cup race is obviously risky, but DiBenedetto has never been in a better situation since joining the Cup Series. He made the move to Wood Brothers Racing this offseason, a satellite organization to Team Penske. The move has already paid dividends as DiBenedetto notched a second-place finish at Las Vegas last weekend. Now, he gets a chance to show his stuff at a track where Team Penske has been dominant. At 80/1, I definitely recommend throwing a small bet his way.
Sleeper Special
Austin Dillon (100/1)
Betting on Dillon to win at a track other than a superspeedway seems like a waste of money, and at just about any other track, I’d agree with you. However, he’s actually been solid at the two-mile ovals. He has a respectable 13.8 average finish in the last 10 races, and he has finished in the top 15 six of the last seven races. In that stretch, Dillon has finished 11th or better in all three starts at Auto Club. After showing top-10 speed at Las Vegas last weekend, this could be the time and the track to roll the dice on Dillon.
