2019 Zippo 200 Odds & Predictions – Favorites, Value Bets & Sleepers at Watkins Glen International: The XFINITY Series kicks off a road course-heavy stretch of its schedule with a trip to Watkins Glen International this weekend. The 11-turn, winding road course will host Saturday’s Zippo 200, and with the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series also in town, we have a loaded field on our hands.
Cup stars Kyle Busch and Ryan Blaney are entered in the event, and road course ace A.J. Allmendinger has also landed a ride. The presence of these big names changes my typical betting strategy for an XFINITY race.
For most of the year, I have been leaning heavily on championship favorites Christopher Bell, Cole Custer and Tyler Reddick. While all three are still listed among the favorites, none of them have been dominant at road courses in the past, and they are unlikely to break through this weekend with such a stacked field. I’m avoiding all of them. Instead, I am going to focus on the drivers with a background in road racing when I am not betting on the frontrunners.
2019 Zippo 200 Odds & Predictions: Favorites, Value Bets & Sleepers at Watkins Glen International
Favorites to Bet
Kyle Busch (+400)
Busch is the favorite whenever he enters an XFINITY race, and in four starts in the series this year, he has three wins and a second-place finish. Busch has led the most laps in three of those four starts, leading 30-plus laps in all four. In 10 career XFINITY starts at The Glen, he has six top-five finishes, leading a race-high 43 laps in a win in his most recent start here in 2017. If you like to play it safe, bet heavy on Busch this weekend.
Ryan Blaney (+650)
The other Cup driver in the field this weekend is Blaney. He has actually never participated in an XFINITY race at Watkins Glen, but he has finished in the top three in his two road course starts in the series. Blaney has also piled up 16 top-five finishes in his last 17 XFINITY starts, winning three times and finishing second on seven other occasions. When Blaney races at this level, he contends for the win. That shouldn’t change at The Glen on Saturday.
Value Bets
Justin Allgaier (+750)
In a field loaded with some big names, Allgaier is the top series regular when it comes to road racing. He is a three-time road course winner for his career, and he won two of the four road course events last year, finishing third or better in three of those four races. Allgaier gives you a little more room for profit while still allowing your to back a road racing ace.
A.J. Allmendinger (+750)
My favorite value bet on the board for Saturday’s race has to be Allmendinger. The former Cup Series regular landed a ride with Kaulig Racing for this one, and he might be the best road racer in NASCAR today. Allmendinger has made three road course starts in the XFINITY Series, winning twice and finishing second in the other start. I suggest investing heavily.
Austin Cindric (+900)
Cindric is still trying to seal a deal with a win, but there is no doubt that he knows how to handle the twists and turns of a road course. He has led laps in four of his five road races in the XFINITY Series, leading double-digit laps in two of those starts and finishing in the top three twice. At +900, he is one of the few drivers getting longer odds who has the road racing talent to hang with the big names in this field.
Sleeper Special
Chase Briscoe (+2000)
He was one of my top value bets for Iowa last weekend, and Briscoe came through with the win. Well, I am going back to the well for Saturday’s race at Watkins Glen. Briscoe has only made two road course starts at the XFINITY level, but he led 33 laps and went to victory lane at The Roval last fall. If I am rolling the dice on a longshot, I am taking my chances with a guy who already has a road course win under his belt.
