2019 Pennzoil 400 Odds & Predictions – Las Vegas Motor Speedway: The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series begins its annual West Coast swing this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The track will host Sunday’s Pennzoil 400, and the race will be the first to feature all of NASCAR’s 2019 rules package for the bigger ovals.
Last weekend at Atlanta, NASCAR used the taller spoiler and a tapered spacer designed to limit cars to 550 horsepower. At Vegas, aero ducts will also be added. Many drivers are expecting the draft to come into play as a result, and during preseason testing, drivers reported that they were able to hold the cars wide open for 10-15 laps.
While the nobody is exactly sure what to expect Sunday, the safest betting strategy is sticking with the big names who have dominated at Vegas and at the intermediate ovals in the past. With that in mind, check out my top favorites and big names to avoid for the Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas.

Favorites to Bet
Kevin Harvick (+450)
Harvick clobbered the field at Vegas last March, leading 214 laps on his way to his second win at the track since 2015. A shot at a sweep ended when he cut a tire in the fall race, but Harvick had already led laps and again had one of the top cars. After dominating the 1.5-mile tracks a year ago, Harvick is your safest bet as NASCAR unveils all facets of its 2019 rules package this weekend.
Martin Truex Jr. (+600)
If last weekend’s race at Atlanta was one lap longer, Truex would probably have been celebrating in victory lane. He settled for second, but he should be right back in the thick of things this weekend at Las Vegas. Truex has finished in the top five in his last three starts here, leading 150 laps in a win in 2017 and leading 96 more laps in the fall race last season. You can pretty much count on him to have a car capable or running up front and contending for the win.

Brad Keselowski (+700)
He kind of snuck up on everyone and came away with the win at Atlanta last weekend, and now, Keselowski gets to head to one of his best tracks. He has reeled of seven straight finishes of seventh or better at Las Vegas, winning a series-best three races in that stretch. Keselowski won the fall race here a year ago, and he has led at least 75 laps in two of the last three Vegas races. If anything, I’m surprised he didn’t open as the favorite.
Joey Logano (+800)
If not for a loose wheel in the final laps, Logano may have gone to victory lane at Atlanta last weekend. He should have another shot at the win Sunday at Las Vegas where he has never finished worse than 12th in seven starts with Team Penske. Logano has four finishes of fourth or better in that same stretch, and he has led at least 25 laps five times, leading 40-plus four times. At +800, he is the best value among the heavy favorites.

Bad Bets
Kyle Busch (+500)
I’m a big Kyle Busch fan, but his home-state track hasn’t always been kind to him. Yes, he was the runner-up here last year, but he only has four top-10s over the last 10 races at Las Vegas. More concerning, Busch has led just 11 combined laps in the last three races. With several other heavy hitters who have stronger numbers at Vegas offering more room for profit, I have a hard time betting on Busch this weekend.
Clint Bowyer (+1800)
I didn’t like Bowyer at his odds last weekend at Atlanta, and the same holds true this weekend at Las Vegas. He’s never been a force at the mile-and-a-half tracks, and Vegas has actually been one of his worst. Bowyer has managed just a single top-15 finish in his last seven starts here, finishing outside the top 20 five times in that span. He is a waste of money at these odds.
