2019 Go Bowling at The Glen Odds & Predictions – Favorites and Bad Bets: Road racing returns to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series this weekend with a trip to Watkins Glen International. Sunday’s Go Bowling at The Glen will be the second of three road course events in 2019, but unlike the first road race of the year at Sonoma back in June, Watkins Glen adds an element of speed to the typical twists, turns and elevation changes of a road course.
While no road course is identical, there is a definite pattern to which drivers perform the best at these tracks. Road racing is a much different discipline than oval racing, and certain drivers just seems to excel at the craft. Over the years, drivers like Tim Richmond, Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart have held the crown as the top road racer in NASCAR, and while the names change, there is a small group of drivers who stand out from the pack when it comes to the road courses.
Given how dominant these road racing aces have been, I suggest placing a majority of your bets on the heavy favorites this weekend. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at my top betting options for Sunday’s Go Bowling at The Glen.
2019 Go Bowling at The Glen Odds & Predictions: Favorites and Bad Bets
Favorites to Bet
Kyle Busch (5/2)
Busch has been the model of consistency at the road courses, and in the last 10 races, he ranks first with a 7.0 average finish, nine top-10s and six top-five finishes. Busch has led laps in eight of the 10 races in that stretch, leading 20-plus laps in each of his last two starts at Watkins Glen. You can count on him having a car that will contend for the win Sunday, so don’t hesitate to invest heavily.
Martin Truex Jr. (7/2)
You can make an argument that Truex deserves to be the overall favorite this weekend, and for my money, he is the smartest bet among the top options. He has won three of the last five road course events, leading a race-high 59 laps in a dominating win at Sonoma back in June and finishing second and first in his last two starts at The Glen. Since the start of the 2017 season, his 179 laps led at the road courses are 113 more than any other driver. He’s been the man to beat.
Denny Hamlin (10/1)
Few drivers have been better than Hamlin in recent weeks, and he rolls into Watkins Glen on a streak of three straight top-five finishes, winning at Pocono last weekend. He has also been excellent at road courses recently, scoring the most points over the last 10 races. Hamlin has cracked the top five in five of the last eight road course events, leading laps in six of those starts and winning at Watkins Glen in 2016. Keep riding the hot hand.
Chase Elliott (10/1)
Yes, he has been in a slump in recent weeks, but Elliott has become one of the best road racers in the series over the last year. He actually scored the most points of any driver at the road courses in 2018, finishing sixth or better in all three starts. More importantly, Elliott is the defending winner of this weekend’s race after leading a race-high 52 laps in his win at Watkins Glen last year.
Big Name to Avoid
Joey Logano (12/1)
Logano is a former winner at Watkins Glen, but he won that race using fuel mileage strategy and has been scuffling at the road courses recently. He has just one top-10 finish in his last six road races, finishing 19th or worse in four of his last five starts. I’d rather back one of the favorites with a stronger road course resume or roll the dice on a sleeper bet.
