2015 Sprint Unlimited Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Vegas Favorites, Contenders and Sleepers to Win: The 2015 Sprint Cup season is officially a couple of weeks away, but Speedweeks does kick off next Saturday with the Sprint Unlimited. The 75-lap exhibition event doesn’t count for points, but it does count for bragging rights. If anything, the lack of points on the line makes the event more exciting as drivers are more than willing to go all out for the win before the real season begins the following Sunday. On that note, here is a closer look at a the drivers that could celebrate the unofficial beginning of the 2015 season with a trip to victory lane.
The Favorites
Not only is Denny Hamlin the defending winner of this weekend’s event, but he is a two-time winner of the Sprint Unlimited overall. Perhaps more importantly, he is coming off a year when he was arguably the best overall performer at Daytona. In addition to his win in the Sprint Unlimited, he won his qualifying race during Speedweeks, finished second in the Daytona 500 and finished sixth at the track in the July event.
It has been a rough couple years for Tony Stewart, but there is something about the Sprint Unlimited that just seems to bring out the best in him. Since the start of the 2001 season, he has a series-leading 5.2 average finish in the event in 14 starts, and his three victories are tied for the most in the event’s history. Stewart always seems to be a serious contender in the event, and he has finished fourth or better seven times in his last 10 starts in the Sprint Unlimited.
In recent years, Kevin Harvick has made the Sprint Unlimited his personal playground. He has four top-five finishes in the last six races, and more importantly, he has a series-leading three wins during the stretch. In fact, Harvick is the only driver to have multiple wins in the event since the start of the 2007 season.
The Contenders
Dale Earnhardt Jr. hasn’t been dominant in the Sprint Unlimited lately, but his career record in the event speaks for itself. In addition to his two victories, he has finished second on three other occasions. Add in the fact that Junior just added a second Daytona 500 win to his impress restrictor plate racing resume last year, and he always needs to be considered a legit threat at any event at Daytona.
Although he has yet to win the Sprint Unlimited, Brad Keselowski has certainly flexed some muscle in his first two starts in the event. He finished fourth in his debut in the event in 2012, and last year, he finished second in his second start in the race. It seems like only a matter of time before Keselowski is celebrating a Sprint Unlimited win.
He will never be a start in the Cup Series, but Jamie McMurray has a knack for winning big races, especially plate tracks. Four of his seven career wins have come at restrictor plate tracks, including two at Daytona. Granted, he has never won the Sprint Unlimited, but he has finished third or better three times in his last five starts, notching a pair of second-place finishes during the stretch.
Sleeper Special
Betting on Danica Patrick to win shouldn’t be something you do on a routine basis, but in a short race with a smaller field at Daytona, she could make some noise. After all, the track has easily been her best on the schedule, and she has logged three top-15s in her last four starts, including a pair of top-10s. The restrictor plates used at Daytona level the playing field, and Patrick’s Stewart-Haas Racing team happens to field some of the best plate track equipment. An upset isn’t out of the question.
