2015 Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Vegas Favorites and Contenders: The 2015 Cup Series season continues this weekend with a trip to Atlanta Motor Speedway. The fast, 1.5-mile oval has been hosting its race on Labor Day weekend in recent years, but it will be the second race on the schedule this year. He shift from September to March could certainly have an impact on the setups teams use, and instead of being a tune-up race for the playoffs as it has been in years past, Sunday’s race will be more of a tone-setter for the months to follow. With that in mind, here is a closer look at the drivers with the best chance of ending up in victory lane Sunday.
2015 Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 Odds: The Favorites
Although he actually finished 19th at Atlanta last year, Kevin Harvick actually had the car to beat, leading a race-high 195 laps before sustaining damage on a late restart and fading in the final laps. He also has three top-10s in his last four starts at the track, and he has led more laps than any other driver during the stretch.
His success at Atlanta has stood the test of the time, and Jeff Gordon has been one of the most reliable drivers at the track throughout his career. Not only does he own the best driver rating at Atlanta, but his 8.1 average finish over the past 10 races is also tops in the series. Gordon’s also leads all drivers with a 6.5 average finish in the last four races at the track, and he won the 2011 event.
He was the runner-up at Atlanta last season, and Matt Kenseth has proven he can contend whenever he shows up at the track. After all, he has finished in the top 15 in his last 15 starts at the track, logging seven top-five finishes during the stretch. Kenseth is arguably the safest bet to be in the mix for a win this weekend.
Not only is Jimmie Johnson a three-time winner at Atlanta, but he has also finished second at the track on four other occasions. He swept both races at the track back in 2007, and he has finished fourth or better in three of his last five starts. Overall, his 10.6 average finish since 2003 ranks third among all drivers.
2015 Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500: The Contenders
As his 18.6 average finish suggests, Kasey Kahne has not been the most consistent driver at Atlanta. That being said, there is no denying his upside. After all, Kahne is the defending winner of this weekend’s race and a three-time winner at the track for his career. In 18 total starts at Atlanta, Kahne has nine top-10s, including seven top-five finishes.
Big things are expected from Carl Edwards this season as he moves from Roush Fenway Racing to Joe Gibbs Racing, and he could make some serious noise as soon as this weekend. Keep in mind that Edwards is a three-time winner at Atlanta for his career, and he has finished in the top five in three of his last five starts at the track.
After posting mediocre numbers at Atlanta early in his career, Denny Hamlin has been a force at the track recently. He has three finishes of eighth or better in his last four starts, and he has two top-three finishes in his last three starts, including a win in the 2012 race. In fact, Hamlin is the only driver in the series with two top-three finishes at Atlanta since 2012.
Since moving to Team Penkse, Joey Logano has become of the strongest drivers in the series, especially at 1.5-mile tracks. In two starts at Atlanta with the organization, he has compiled an 8.0 average finish, finishing second at the track in 2013. Fresh off a win in the Daytona 500, don’t be surprised if Logano makes it back-to-back wins to open the 2015 season.
